Recurring router problem

    I've a Zyxel P-660HW-T1 router which I use for internet access. Unfortunately since Tuesday it's started disconnecting at about 7.50pm daily and from that point on, it engages in a constant reconnect-connect-instant disconnect cycle.

    My ISP tells me that there's no problem on the phone lines so it must be related to the router itself or outside interference, however I don't use it wireless. It's simply connected by a phone cable and then to my computer by ethernet cable.

    All lights are ok except for the DSL and INTERNET lights after 7.50pm, up to that it works fine all day.

    Here's the log during one of these cycles:

    inCrcErr = 0x00000014
    inBufOverflow = 0x00000000, inBufMaxLenErr= 0x00000000
    inBufLenErr = 0x00000005, inBufDescrOV = 0x00000000
    outPkts = 0x0000002d, outDiscards = 0x00000000
    outF4Pkts = 0x00000000, outF5Pkts = 0x00000000
    softRstCnt = 0x00000000

    May be some power usage kicks in around that time and causes power fluctuations.

    You could use a surge protector to cut out spikes but if the power is dropping then you would need an interruptible power supply.

    FSL's point exactly - what happens at 7.50 in your house? Or even outside? It could be something at mains voltage running parallel to your DSL line.

    Try get stats before & after...

    also, when does your DSL come back?

    According to my providers tech support it's an insulation/voltage problem on the external line as when they ran tests after 7.50pm a problem showed up, and that was after I'd disconnected everything from the master switch.

    Does this should like a plausible problem? It's a risk of €100 for an engineer to come out if he find the problem is not with the Eircom line. In addition to the €30 spent on a new router which doesn't seem to be the problem.

    DSL comes back intermetiently, and sometimes the INTERNET connection light comes back and can spare enough to refresh a page before disconnecting again, and again.

    Surge protector had no effect.

    depends on what the scope of the technician's inspection will be: will they look at the telephone point in your house, or will they look at the incoming line from the pole / junction box chamber inwards?

    There is the risk that a dodgy extension wired in your house is the root cause of the problem, and by simply disconnecting all extensions except the first telephone point the problem is solved: therefore the fault doesn't lie with eircom. Can you check this yourself?
