    Dear _______

Thank you for your response to our advertisements and for making yourself available for interview on ________________

The standard of applications was very high and I regret to inform you that another candidate had qualifications and experience more closely matching the precise requirements of the position on offer.

Consequently, I am sorry to inform you that we will not be proceeding further with your application.

I will (with your approval) keep your application on file and should some suitable position arise in the near future I will revert to you at that time.

Again, thank you for your time and trouble in applying to us and attending for interview. Your interest in the position advertised is greatly appreciated and I am sorry the outcome is not more positive in this instance

I wish you every success with your career and remain

    Yours sincerely

    ________________

In the interview, they told me that other jobs might be coming up that might suit me if I wasn't successful in getting this one. So bearing that in mind, does this email strike you as anything more than a generic rejection email?

    Thanks!

I hate to say it but it pretty much sounds like a generic rejection email sent out by HR, but if they've kept your details there could still be hope!

Well, it was sent by one of my interviewers, a uni lecturer. But yeah, it does sound a bit generic indeed.

That's totally generic, I've seen many quite similar in my time
    'PFO's as they're known :D

    Hi.

I don't want to rain on your parade but that sounds like a F**K OFF letter to be honest.

However, if they said to you that there might be something coming up in the future, there might be. You never know.

Keep up the fight and don't give up.

I'm afraid this could easily have been any one of the many letters I sent out this year. It's certainly not intended to mean "PFO" as some have suggested here, but it means "not this time". There's no way to select a candidate without having to send these out.

    Be at peace,

    Z

Generic, but if you're on the dole and someone asks you if you've been looking for work, you can show them these. They do have a use.

I have gotten some, tbh, and then gotten a call a few weeks later from the same agency saying they had something similar, would I be interested, so don't give up hope.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Standard rejection email. PFO ect. Not to be taken personally. Head up, plenty more fish in the sea.

Can everyone please stop referring to The Generic Rejection letter/email as PFO's. You are in Personal Issues. This is someones life you are talking about :(

Personally, for a generic email I think this is a very nice one. And the op should take solace in that and use it to instil confidence in their abilities for their next job interview.

If only that were true! I have fairly specialised experience (a science field), and that definitely restricts me. And little working experience. And I'm overqualified for more stop gap type jobs.

There's nothing wrong with getting a 'PFO', that's just a nickname they are given, something to make them a little more lighthearted
It in no way whatsoever reflects how you did in an interview, you could have been amazing but someone equally amazing had one more months experience than you and so got the job
HR depts are very busy and they aren't going to write specific mails for each candidate so they send out the generic, commonly referred to as a PFO, just for a laugh

If they told you that there might be other jobs to suit you coming up then there is absolutely no reason in the world to doubt this. That mail was just the generic 'you didn't get this job' mail

It's not a HR department, it's more localised than that, it was a job in a university, not a company. :)

Yes, it is a very polite mail. :) But then, he was a very polite guy!

Yup -sounds like a PFO to me! :D

I got one with a difference though. Says feedback was very positive, and they wouldn't hesitate to contact me if a suitable position arose.

Still filed under 'B' though
