If you must use your tumble dryer a large dry towel in with the load helps to dry the clothes more quickly.

Power down computers & tv's, use cold water to wash clothes, use crankable torches and lanterns :p ,energy saving bulbs and purchase Grade A appliance which are an investment in themselves saving energy long term :D

An actual realistic tip.... for people who have eating time clocks witht the ability of switching heating on and off for 10-15mins at a time using the dial like clock opposed to the digital one. People using this on timer generally leave it on for say two hours, but if you give the heating say, a half hour come on time, knock it off for fifteen, then back on for fifteen and so on, your house will stay headed up without the need to keep the heating running constantly, therefore if it is of nearly half the time, you save nearly half the running costs!!!

The standby light is your enemy! Your TV or DVD can use up to 60% of the normal running cost when in standby.
When choosing a computers get a laptop. A typical desktop PC consumes about 5 times as much energy as a laptop.

When cooking try to use the perfect sized pan for the job. If you use a pan that's too big you are just wasting energy.
Remove any oven shelves you are not using. They take in lots of heat.
Put lids on pots when you are cooking vegetables. This will reduce the amount of heat escaping into the room.
Try to limit how many times you open the oven door. You remove about 20% of the heat every time you do.
The smaller you chop your food the quicker it will cook

    • Turn switches off at the wall, those pilot lights will cost ya!
    • Use a good booklight in bed instead of your bedside lamp - it saves electricity and doubles as a bookmark!
    • Electric throws use far less electricity than electric storage heaters or portable radiators - and you can snuggle them too!
    • Fill the kettle before you boil it, boiling small amounts of water over and over is a waste (and bad for the kettle).
    • Turn everything off, pull on your shoes and go outside for an hour. Lights, kitchen appliances, TV, computer, hairdrier, phone charger. None of these for an hour might save you a fiver!

Don't waste valuable energy staring at a blank comment box and wondering what stunningly original energy conservation tip you're going to come up with. Cog the good ones from someone else.

Use solar-powered lights or candles when its dark! Candles make any room look brighter. Oh and a proper old-fashioned fire is always the best option for warmth!!

Dress your entire family up in polyester clothing. Have a big group hug and wriggle around a lot. You'll warm up pretty fast and the bursts of light generated by each shock of static electricity will provide enough light to.........well, not see anything actually.

    As easy as that?

Never, ever leave the t.v. on standby or chargers plugged in...it's so annoying! (and energy wasting!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

To eliminate the need to turn on the heating at night, purchase many cats and sleep with them all in your bed.
