Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi Lads, guess what, i was in the mart twice since ive been on here. lol:D

    I have 2-3 questions.

first off, what are these types of cattle, and would u advise a newbie farmer to purchase them.. . im looking to speend around 800-850 a head, and would be hoping to get in and around the 380-440kg mark, the higher the better. we always had charolais cattle, but are more exp i have noticed than AA,.. nearly 200 a head dearer.

anyway, can you give me the load down on the below? what are these types of cattle, and would u recommend me buying a few, i know one or two:

AAX : Angus? we used to have these in the 80s & 90s, im thinkings these is my price bracket? but are they wild? hmm:rolleyes:

BBX :awh , Belgian Blue. while we had AA, we bought one BB, stone mad, never again. so im not chancing it.

CHX: Charolais. seem to be 80% of the stock in the local mart.

    LMX???
    AUX????
    HEX????
    SIX????
    FR????
    RBX????

just looking for 2 or 3, max 4, for the winter, .. i have all the setup, + bales.

    Thanks lads

Hi OP, the X denotes a cross bred usually these animals are from the dairy herd and sired by a beef bull eg CHX is a 1/2 charolais half fresian or holstein.

The wilder cattle tend to be LM (LMX)
What do you intend for them first off? Killing or sell on as store cattle (further feeding) in the mart?
Limousin- Wilder/kill out leanish. Depends what they're crossed with (eg- LMxBB will kill out more fat then LMxAA
BBx- supprised you found them wild, we always get them quiet!
Aubrac- No idea. Heard they are lean but no real idea.
Hereford- Quiet cattle, rarer seen these days, if you get a HE it will be most likely off an older farmer or a bad pedigree.
Simmental- Personally dislike them, but more so because of their growth (suckler so it turns my cattle too tall hitting their 9 month stage)
Fresian- Just no. Unless you get British fresians, running them for one winter is not enough.
Romagnola (I think)- I know of them but no idea of meat/fattening etc. Hear the Italians love them but it's a specialist market.

    thanks Karen,

to answer your question, i was thinking of holding until ready for factory, but at the mart last saturday i saw animals up to 750kgs ( in my head i was thinking why arent these going to the factory, who would buy these. then id hear "Sold, €1560)
so to answer it short, i dont know.
im new to it, and will have to go through the process to learn whats best for me. buy now and hold till factory, or sell next year and buy lighter again, i dont know. its about getting the right strategy. . . . .. care to share one with me ??? :-)
my dad said he used to bring to the factory, but then stopped, as he was getting better prices in mart.? ? is this true?
    ..

ill post a "First time Mart Experince" thread tomorrow, too tired now, few things i want ironed out.

    thanks again karen. .

what u think of AA??? are these the pure black cattle i see?? .. not to many. but price was closer for me. . .

AA would be easier than other breeds to finish for the factory, but you won't be getting 1560e for too many of them. How many have you space/feed for?

well, if i was to feed cattle Nov-Dec-Jan-Feb-Mar, with 30 Round Bales of silage. . . how many could i get?
could feed and easily house 15. . . but my budget and head says no, start small. . something like 3-5

i have plenty of grass, I had no animals for the last year, took a cut of silage off in July, plent of grass on hills and where was cut in july. .wont be taking a second cut either. so plenty of grass id say. . . . 26-28 acres i think.
