Has your consultant suggested an epidural to try and alleviate the problem? I had one about 5 weeks ago and it has been a huge help. My consultant was convinced I'd need the surgery, I had pain all down my left leg with a severe limp and had lost a lot of sensation in my foot and lower leg.

Had the epidural and between that and anti-inflammatories (as required) I've seen a huge improvement, so much so my surgery has been postponed.

I can't run but I have a lot more strength in the leg now. I went for a 3 miles walk on Wednesday and felt great after it.

It is definitely worth a try.

p.s. there is a long thread on degenerative disc disease here:

    Best of luck.
