Do you remember that threat made a month or two ago by the hacker group "anonymous" that they were going to destroy facebook? Do you believe they will succeed, or not?

It was fake. Why give Facebook three months notice? They'd up their security and make the job harder. :p

Considering the already abysmal state of Facebook's security, it wouldn't be hard at all to make it better. I'm pretty sure even Sony had better security than Facebook.

    @OP
Those who put out the message Anon was going to take down FB weren't actually really part of Anon, more wannabes than anything.

Now the actual members of Anon could easily take down Facebook, but as far as I know, they really don't give a flying fúck about it.

I think Facebook is taking itself down.
It's had it days in the sun, my news feed has slowed to a trickle.
I have requested a download of all my data, once I get that I am closing my account

    Ah!

The real crackers of Anon can get into Facebook. That's a simple bloody fact.

Considering they've been able to access various Government and other highly secure sites, it's a safe bet they can get into Facebook if they wanted to.

What do you mean by get into?

Do you mean hacking someone's account by getting in their accounts or accessing actual real usable data?

There isn't much can be done about account cracking seeing as people all use passwords that are too short or too dictionary or otherwise easily breakable.

Your data is facebook's biggest assets you can be pretty sure that this is well protected as much from hackers as competitors.
I doubt that they are going to risk their biggest asset fall into anyones hands easily.

Yep it's an option under account settings.
Not sure if they FTP it or what but they will make it available in a downloadable form, I let you know when I get it

Yes but inward migrants live here and pay taxes here

They would employ the locals if the locals had the skills.
Not sure many companies would be arsed to include relocation packages if they didn't have to.

Nothing stopping Irish people learning another language is there? I went to work in Switzerland for a month, I learned enough phrases to get me started in the weeks before I left, another language really isn't that difficult

Unfortunately, I didnt escape it. But now looking at it, its pretty scaring. Yes its great for getting updates for college and when ya run outta credit but like... you know its bad when your hear about it in face to face conversations about "his status" or "her status" or "did ya see that post"...

Pathetic what FB is doing to people! And yeah, theres a difference in behaviour! My mam joined up few months ago.. and you would definately see behaviour changes...

Aplogies RM I had edited my comment and then u posted..not sure that I wanna keep having this debate about immigration..that why I felt I went off-topic and re-edited it..
    but i will say
The problem is you can do all the training you like but for jobs like these you really cant buy how to sprache? german in 3 easy lessons and do the interview..learning a language to the degree required by these companies would require you to have the means to travel to that country and immerse yourself in it..as you where fortunate enough to do.Therefore they will happily relocate people.

Agreed we are dragging it off topic.
I had typed me reply and didn't want to waste it, tis not everyday I string a few sentences together!

    Anyway back on topic,
Bringing facebook down would be a huge challenge, its a system that has huge distribution with many layers of security and redundancy
At best it could be inconvenienced for a while.

Anon won't destroy facebook, but I would just love if they did! I actally have a facebook account and use it a reasonable amount... but I would'nt miss it at all if it were gone.

The question is though; Where would all these pathetic facebook addicts moan about their loss if they could'nt update their status???? :D

I really couldn't give a shít about Facebook or whether it's destroyed or not. My own Social Network exists in the real world, comprising of real world interactions with actual friends. Embarrassingly I might not have 1400 friends or more, but at least they are genuine friends.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,515 ✭✭✭LH Pathe

well they'll have to scribble on every face and have wiped their arse with every page to have truly destroyed it.

.. wha? it's not an.. actual book.

I've never understood people being proud of not being on facebook.
Do you think that people don't interact in the real world when they're on it or something? Or is it just another way for people to try and feel unique?

Either way, if you're not on it, just stfu about not being on it. It's not a big deal.

DeV is boards.ie. If he turns off, so does boards. Pray he never does.

As for Anon destroying Facebook - they'll likely dent it slightly. Mark Zuckerberg is far too rich for it to be destroyed fully.

I'm exactly the same. You might think I would have 1000s of FB "friends" but in fact I have 67. And I would be pretty confident in saying I've had a pint with almost all of them.

On twitter I have 388 followers. I'm a lot nastier on twitter too, because its my personal voice, not as an admin on Boards but as moi.

This obsession with collecting "friends" seems unhealthy to say the least. For someone who is supposedly a "sochul medja guru", I find most social media bland, brain-rot populated by overly needy gob****es.

I think long term we will come to realise that social media which is centred on "you" rather than on the topic at hand, quickly becomes tiresome and not very "social" at all.

i think you'll find its the people themselves who caused that destruction, not facebook

unless mark zuckerburg has taken to logging into people's profiles and writing stupid status updates that have gotten people into trouble...

Where does pride come into it? And where did I say in my OP that I wasn't on it? Yet another example of an inability to read posts properly. Read my post again and this time interpret what I actually said and not what you think I said.

    Anyway this is......

Anyway, sorry to make you look incredible stupid here, but I have a joint Facebook account with my wife. She uses it occasionally, but I rarely. In fact we only set it up to share various photos of weddings ect, with friends across the globe.

The last time I logged in was back in June, to put up some pics of my Sister-in-Laws wedding. I couldn't help but notice who were all these people requesting our friendship? The poor oul sad bastárds, quite pathetic really.
