Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This 04 VW Polo is way heavier on petrol in the last few months .

I'd reckon less than 30 miles per gallon .

What do we need to do to increase fuel efficiency ?

has it been serviced recently? Also I use redx, you can get it in halfords, there are different types one is a shot, another is a bigger bottle and then you fill the engine it cleans out the injectors, I found it. elped a lot, my car was doing about. 10.5l for every 100km, now its doing around 7.5-8l for every 100km

Well the first thing to do would be trying to adjust your driving style. That's the major factor when talking about MPG. Think about it, no hard acceleration away from lights, stops etc.

Heres 100 tips on increasing MPG, some are extreme which I'd say avoid but there are quite a few valuable ones to which increase your MPG without much effort.

the tyre pressure is a very good point, if they are low it highers fuel consumption

There are loads of things which could cause higher fuel use, lack of servicing, poor fuel-air ratio, bad ignition, heavy right foot, handbrake on, binding brakes, soft tyres, towing so it's impossible to give any definitive answer on the internet.

Btw, what makes you think your mpg has dropped, have you been monitoring it for the past few months and if so was it a sudden change or a gradual drift downwards?

What do you need to do? ... let a mechanic diagnose and fix the problem would be a good start. He should have the correct gear to do a deeper diagnosis.

    I presume this is a 1.2 Polo?

What kind of driving are you doing? Urban? Motorway? Mixed?

I forgot to mention that I've a similar 1.4 engine in my golf and I can reach 40 MPG average (most of the time) but thats due to driving locally and on N roads, very little city driving.

OP might be no harm to see how much MPG your getting by filling it and resetting the trip and fill it again(recording no of litres needed to refill) and see how many litres got You X amount of miles. Then take it from there, you may be getting more then you think.

Hopefully You get it sorted ;)

I did that recently but I was afraid to push it to the redline :D and I didn't leave it running near max RPMs for very long only like 3 mins. Just got it running a little faster then usual really,a good oul run should be good for it! We all know how the 1.4 VW (AHW) engines are made of putty. I'm suprised it didn't seize up after it !

Plenty of advice to work on there -- the most obvious one is to bring it to a mechanic.
We don't mind paying a mechanic , as long as we are guaranteed to receive an increase in mpg.

We did a test recently on a spin from Dublin to Wexford down the N11 , and it worked out at around 30 pmg.
Around town would be a lot less than that .

Anyone tell us what we should expect to receive in mpg when car has been fully serviced . ( 04 Polo 1.2 )
