I have recently broke away from the gym and taken to the road.

Im new to running although I have gone out once a week for years. Not consistently.

For the past few weeks I have been every other night and taken the plunge .

    I have entered this http://www.santadash.ie/indexdublin.html

Looks like a bit of a laugh tbh. I thought it would be a good place to start.

I dont want to be last and I am fully committed to training for it.

I am asking the other runners on here to advise me along the way. I am hoping posting here will add to my motivation

My times are really lame at the moment. Im doing 5km in 36mins. Which I believe to be nowhere near good enough.

I am now going to track my progress with endomondo a bit better. I have not been using it every time. But here is the bulk of my logs so far.

    I am 35 years old.
    Male
and weigh 87kg. I am of a large build from years of carpentry and off road motorcycling. I have a 9 month old ruptured disc in my lower back and a 10 month old broken ankle.
I have to train around these injuries as pushing past pain on them is not an option.

I bought a big tub of whey for a 1 shake after a run or cycle . Im not sure if that is correct, but it seems to make sense. And I am consuming more healthy carb rich food.

spent a fortune on a foot test and good trainers yesterday in B2R and waiting on a HRM in the post.

    ANY Advise would be helpful

I'm no expert but you're not gonna bring your 5km time significantly by just going out and running the distance as fast as you can every time.

If you're new to running you need to build an endurance base first so for now forget about distances vs times and just go out and run for 45-60 mins 3/4 times a week for a month. It's hard not to keep watching the clock but it'll pay off.

After that look up Hal higdon for a structured plan that'll introduce speed and tempo runs into your training.

It's a pain at the beginning but after a few weeks you'll be comfortably running 10km + in 60mins and you'll be much better prepared to start bringing your times down. Good luck!

Going by your time on September 1st you should seriously consider taking up sprinting :D

Seriously, best of luck with it, i just started running a bit myself and its pretty rewarding.
