Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi folks,I need to buy a used car as the wifes 00 micra is on its last legs.Neither of us would be doing huge mileage in the new car so I dont think theres any need for a 1.9tdi and the smaller engine would save us on tax & insurance. Is there any good 1.4 or 1.6 cars out there? Our budget is €2,500 max.
    Thanx in advance :)

Smaller engine cars are a false economy - you'll save a bit in tax and insurance, but you'll end up paying a lot more for the fuel. Typical Irish mistake tbh... 1.4 engines generally couldn't pull a wet paper bag apart, way too underpowered and just guzzle petrol.

I have to disagree on the petrol matter.. My FIAT 1.2 does 48-50mpg and my mates wife has an Aygo that gives over 60mpg.

while i disagree with challengemaster on 1.2 cars like puntos, which are pretty frugal indeed. but 1.4 golfs/focus' are indeed false economy. my old astra, although pretty quick for a 1.4 , was way thirstier than my current 1.8. im doing the same journeys, the same routes as then but whereas the 1.4 used cost me €40 a week, the 1.8 costs under €30. bigger engine...has to work much less.

Ok, I should have said that there are exceptions, but generally the 1.4 cars do not fall under them. Especially the corolla / focus.

A rather broad sweeping generalisation there I would suggest. Depends a lot on the car body that the 1.4 litre engine is mated to and the usage thats intended of the car...munching up motorway miles versus city driving, heavily laden versus popping down to the shop etc. I do agree that tearing along a motorway at 75 MPH in the likes of a 1.0 Micra/ Yaris/ Polo etc and doing up to and well over 4,000 rpm is certainly a false economy though

What sort of abuse has the micra suffered to be on its last legs??They last forever, even with little or no maintenance!
If it does need repairs, how much will they cost versus the cost of buying a new car?

There is a world of difference between slugs like the 75 bhp 1.4 Focus and Golf and the likes of the 90 bhp 1.4 Corolla. You can't generalise when there are so many variation between models in terms of weight and engine output/engineering. The 1.6 Golf & Focus would have roughly similar performance to the 1.4 Corolla but inferior economy.
