UPC Phone Question.

We were offered a broadband upgrade to 50mb from 25mb last month and the girl on the phone said that they would give us a home phone with free off peak calls or something like that.

They sent out a new white modem,Thomson I think,to replace our old Cisco one but they never sent a phone out.

Bill came in the post this morning and it has a phone number for us on the bill aswell as a €27 charge for digital telephony, despite us never even using the phone!

Is it possible for us to buy a phone and plug it into the wall or will we have to pay UPC for a special one?

    Cheers

You can buy a standard phone, but it plugs into the back of the router.

Do you guys mean just a normal house phone that's screwed into the wall or a bog standard dect phone that will work with UPC?

Sorry for hijacking, but can anyone recommend a good cordless phone with speaker function.

Also am getting UPC phone installed this week.

    Any good options on argos.ie?

Don't mind those posts, UPC phone is fantastic. I have it in a year now and never had a problem, I would never go back to eircom.
The UPC phone connects to the broadband modem via an rj11 cable.
you can buy twin and triple pack dect phones, and you just need the one UPC point installed in the house for this set up.
It's also possible to wire your UPC line to your old existing eircom phone points around the house via the junction box in the hall, but you will need to get your own electrician in to do it. it would be a lot of messing around and really not necessary in my opinion. Depends on your set up.

    Thanks mark.
I've actually no setup. Never had a fixed line.
So i can safely buy one of those twin packs and dont need a second entry point?

That’s it, you only need the one UPC point, they will provide the modem, phone connects into this, simple set up.
I have 1 phone upstairs and one in livingroom...twin pack Panasonic type.
Let me know how you get on/ If you need any help with set up?

OP did you have to pay extra for the broadband speed upgrade or did they offer it to you for free?
