According to AIBA site Con sheehan won 24 4 and fight stop in the second round..Just finished in last few minutes i think!

Great stuff if this is accurate!

Con Sheehan was 9-3 up after the first round and must have really upped the style in the second to stop his Tajik opponent. Next round he meets Cammarelle of Italy, it'll be tough. The Italian is the Olympic champ and twice a world champion. Will be good to see how Con measures up to the best though.

Its very unlucky con's meeting Cammarelle before the final 8 cut off. He looks comfortable at super heavy and Cammarelle is the only one I was hoping he'd avoid.

Really hope he pulls out a great performance and puts it up to the Italian.

Darren will fight Bulgarian middleweight Mladen Manev in the next round, European bronze medallist in 2010. Intersestingly though, it was Darren who defeated Manev at this tournament (6-0) to win the silver medal.

So 7 into the last 16.
Looking at the updated draws, Darren is the only seed left on his side of the draw! He could face Ogogo in the semi, Ogogo bt the Russian today. Top seed Ateov was beaten by a Japanese boxer Murata, who Darren may meet in the QF.

Could we get 4 medals, Nevin, Joyce, O'Neill and Ward.
The draw has opened up for Joyce also with most seeds going out early.
    Exciting times:)

In amateur boxing I don't believe there are ever surprises. Most of the fights are hotly contested. So so competitive. Not like other sports where there are many duds in the field. The difference between the best and the top 32 say is very little.

1st one through - take a bow Darren O'Neil. Delighted for him after years of hard work.

That might be true overall but Ward had appeared so precocious and talented that in my mind at least I was thinking of a gold medal as his target rather than qualification. Probably a valuable lesson for him anyway and definitely wouldn't bet against him making it to London.

I agree. And I had hopes of him possibly winning, but no, at this level, and at his weight, anything is possible. He is still developing. He is fighting mature men. Shows how good he is.

Like I said, at or near the top, there is so little between them. Add that to the computer scoring, and you know what I mean.

All I can see is the results page on the AIBA website which at least is being updated regularly

He did, after three warnings first.

Ward got his PUBLIC warning without any warning at all.

Olympic Qualifying April 14–22, 2012 in Istanbul. Next, only and last chance!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 969 ✭✭✭radharc

Just read that the host country is entitled to a guaranteed 5 male boxers (plus one female) at the Olympics. Doesn't seem fair to me to allow british boxers in if they're not good enough to qualify, solely because of their nationality???

Well, didn't it used to be that the host was allowed all 12 weights?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 969 ✭✭✭radharc

It used to be 9 for Athens & Beijing anyway but for some reason I had thought they had got rid of all guaranteed places. There was definitely talk of it anyway

anybody have a working stream today. can't find one at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,361 ✭✭✭YouTookMyName

    Streaming today is a joke.

RTE and GBsport are streaming the quarters tomorrow.

No live scores from the AIBA website and country restrictions on the stream too.

Stream from Azerbaijan is gone aswell.

Massive clusterfuck. All across the board.
