Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    quota status?

    cow condition ?

    Grass/ winter feed condition

what is available from your supplier and cost ?

all above will determine what to feed

we are approx 13% over quota, feeding no meal

    spring calving herd milking 21ltrs. @ 4.45 b/f and 3.85 Protein

will be milking OAD in 2 to 3 weeks time to get back to approx 5% over quota

Just when i see you say your cows are giving 21 litres at 3,85 protein is there jersey in any of them? Thats pretty good figures for this time of year and the weather the last few weeks! I ask really because Im curious what line to go down next year with the ai. Our genetics rep is saying stay away from the jerseys but the fj seem to singing them from the roof tops. I no the fj isnt the be all and end all but I wanna no what anyone else thinks. Proteins at approx 3.5-3.6% and 23 gallons a day. Really what im asking is the jersey crossbreed the way to go

I assume typo and 23litres, but why consider changing with that production? The important question is are you making a comfortable living and happy doing it?

High input/high output, low input/low output, Holstein, BF, Jersey, everyother dairy breed, OAD, robot etc and profit are not mutually exclusive. Each done well will give a good living, the converse is true too.

Hey guys, just starting back milking again and i'm wondering what should i be looking for in the dairy feed this time of year, and,the price range out there...
i'm presuming high energy, high protein with magnesium included,(cows going out as they calve). so far i've priced 2 high energy 18% dairy nut..one €280 the other €260.
also..what do ye start your calves on.. the bags of crunch run into a sweet bit of money..is there any reason why a weanling mix could'nt be used to get them going..

on the calf front, dont give them weanling ration , the reason the calf crunch is a bit dearer is its what the calf needs, for the rumen to develop, i feed calf crunch til they are 6 weeks along with hay, then move them on to calf grower

I'd say a 16% high energy maize based nut and either order small quantities and don't get all calmag requirements put in just incase the have to go back in. On the calf meal i use a high spec pellet, only slightly cheaper than crunch, wouldn't use some of the mixes that are been sold at the moment, too much poor ingrediants.
