Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Buying a Car

I need to buy a new car.

I travel between Inchicore & Citywest from Monday to Friday. This is a return trip of 28km each day(17 miles).

I travel from Dublin to Galway approximately every second weekend; maybe a little more. Thats a return trip of 474km (294 miles).

Therefore, for the next year, I would envisage doing the following mileage (approx): (52 * 17) + (294 * 26 )= 8528. I should add on another 5k for miscellaneous stuff, to bring me near to the average I have done with my current car (And there isnt a whole lot of difference between what I did in the last 4 years, and what I will be doing in the next year). I'd imagine I will be doing close to 15k miles (Just under it I guess), with some of it motorway driving, some not.

    1. Would you advise I get a petrol or diesel?

    2. Ideally, I would like to get a car with cruise control, because I have a habit of driving too fast and would like something to curtail me.

    3. My budget is somewhere around the 10k mark. I am willing to spend much lower if it represents better value. But wouldnt be able to go a whole lot over 10k.

    4. I have been posting on here in recent weeks by various cars I have looked at:

The above represent some of the cars I have looked at, but when I ask for feedback on here, they are always over priced according to boards members! :-)

My favorite car to drive has been the laguna, without a doubt. They seem like a beautiful car to drive, with a good spec. It would be nice to get a car with a decent spec for a change. I may be alone here, but I actually though some of the Fords I looked at felt a bit cheap and plasticy in the interior; I didnt really like that. That said, I havent looked at any Ford Focus Ghia yet....which has been recommended to me. I have looked at a couple of Avensis, I am aware of their reputation, but they were a bit ordinary & average looking for me; perhaps I am being a bit fussy.

Now, given that every one of the links I listed above is over-priced according to boards members, I was wondering if anybody could suggest a car for sale that would suit my needs, and is not over-priced! I would prefer to go the dealer route, because as is obvious, I dont know a whole lot about cars and could see myself getting screwed over if I bought privately.

Your advice & feedback is appreciated!

If you head down home every second weekend then you need a Caralla or a Golf daysul to fit in with the lads when you get there :p

I recently upgraded to a Diesel from a petrol, and guess what I'm after going back to get my old car back, Diesel isn't as cracked up as it seems. But then again newer cars have low tax bans and Diesels, not sure about petrol do unreal miles to the gallon. you mentioned an avensis, did you consider the Honda Accord. A beautiful car. If you drive a honda you'll never want to drive anything else, they along with Hyundai and Toyota are the best cars ever made, can't beat the Asian cars. Even the Honda civic have beautiful models both, short and long. They say people should get a diesel if they are doing 15000 miles PLUS a year. I know some one that upgraded from a petrol to diesel Ford focus and they save €20 a week on fuel. volkswaged are supposed to be the most economical Diesels going . Hope my post helped
