A new recreational greenway is being officially launched by a combined effort of Waterways Ireland, South Dublin, Fingal and Kildare County Councils, Dublin City Council, Office of Public Works (OPW) the Irish Heart Foundation and the Irish Sports Council this week.

The Green Loop Trail (An Ceangal Glas) is a 36km multi-use trail suitable for walkers, runners and cyclists. It extends from the Dublin City area out to Leixlip in Co. Kildare, along the Royal Canal and back along the scenic Grand Canal to the Irish National War Memorial Park and Phoenix Parks. All together it’s a varied trail, predominantly off-road and brings people into a number of nice parks and green areas in the city !

The trail is being opened initially for one day, on the 2nd October to celebrate National Trails Day 2011 but depending on public interest it may be opened as a permanent trail at a later date.

A number of events are being organised in various parks along the trail including a Green Loop Trail Cycle which will cover the entire trail.

Further details on the Green Loop Trail can be obtained from the website www.irishtrails.ie (advice section)
