Indeed, days ago I said the chances of snow for xmas were nil, I wasn't very popular! Last xmas saw a temperature of -15.7c in Dublin, this xmas it wont be far off +15.7c.
    There's always Jan and Feb.

Definately the appearance of a big change way out in FI would be the start of a setup that saw our proper cold weather last year! January might be interesting...

Hopefully the 18z follows suit, I don't really understand the ensembles all that well as of yet so can't comment on it being an outlier.

that looks like a serious downgrade for snow in England and Wales.

Charts have the High playing out in differnt wasy tho. Linking up with the Greenland high. Albeit briefly. Encouraging none the less.

Does that mean that this low has moved further north then?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Harps

Wrong thread for all this but no its moved further south on tonight's runs meaning the south miss out on most of the precipitation. Could still go either way I'd say but looking like England will get most of it either way

We're still forecast snow showers in the north either way though, that low has no real effect on us

To be honest I'm glad, unless the precip is snow..........I don't want it ;)

The good ol' 18z aka the pub run is always a good morale booster!

Depressing viewing at the moment with mild south westerlies for the most part, thankfully the Op Run is a big outlier but even so there's little to look forward to for the rest of this year by the looks of it.

The irony if a blocking high just sat like this for a month :D

Winter of 62 / 63 something similar did happen that year. Snowed substantially on Dec 26th, even close to the south coast of the UK, and then after the snow, a blocking high moved in, and the snow stuck till March, it was basically very cold and dry for pretty much the entire period. A google search for january 1963 synoptic chart is very revealing, all sorts of relevant links, and pictures of the weather that pretty much paralysed parts of the UK for close on 2 months.

In relation to the previous message, the synoptic charts for the period can be seen at http://www.mikett.plus.com/winter-62-63-maps/january/index1.htm

It will be interesting to see if anything similar is brewing for the new year, if it is, the snow addicts will have plenty to be getting excited about.

For what it's worth, The coldest month at Mullingar was Jan 63 with the mean average being -0.7C, http://www.met.ie/about/weatherobservingstations/mullingar.asp

    Steve

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
