Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Indeed. He does'nt strike me as a 'people person'. More a condescending person but it is only fair to give it a chance.

He'll make the show about himself as usual....

On the promo he says "Join us from haaaaaa past one on Saturday"... I'd say Gaybo is tutting to himself at the radio..

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Embarassing stuff in any place but in a rugby club of all places - is he for real?

IS HE TRYING OR IS IT TRYING STUFF? Power to the people and don't forget that the early BIRD gets the worm, and maybe the audience.

I heard most of it and it was'nt to bad. Not as much cringey stuff as I expected although there were moments. I'll listen again.

The "early bird" is late. The 1.30 start time just doesnt seem right

it was as expected ..pure charlie bird madsense.

he said " this is the charlie bird show" 3 times...

lol..the guy is seriously bonkerstastic..the separation between himself and real people is amazing..its like hes trying to be a person..

that "who are we all cheering for " was again mad.

his whole sense of what tone he should be speaking in is messed up..

but it will be a have to listen..

    gwan charlie you madman

Charlie was just a hack in his day who had the great fortune of the scoop of the century (as far as the peace process was concerned) when the provisionals sent him a letter outlining they had called a ceasefire. In recent years charlie has become excess to requirements. His ill-fated sojourn to the states was cut short because he was unhappy there, to be frank there in these straightened times there is no need for RTE to have a correspondant on the ground in the states. Rte seem to continually fabricate tv and radio programmes just to justify keeping charlie in a lofty wage, that wage would be far better served employing several young and upcoming journos.

    Listening to this drivel now.

He has a panel of handwringers on whinging about the gubbermint not doing enough to help "de vunerabble".

A couple of minutes ago a guy suggested some measures that "wouldn't cost the government anything" and then proceeded to list out a load of new/increased social welfare benefit ideas. He must think that the money for these schemes will just appear out of thin air.

Thats it, can listen to this anymore. From now on, the radio goes off at 1.30, or maybe another station?

Caught the start of this in someone else's house yesterday...a guy going on about someone he knew, who a few years ago was "worth 3 to 4 million" but that he last week visited the family "by the light of a mobile phone who were living off rice crispies" or some such rubbish (he acutally sniggered slightly after the mention of the cereal  ).
Am I supposed to feel pity for these people (that's assuming of course they actually exist)...few of us have been worth that amount of money and if we were I assume we'd make allowances and consolidate money to live off in the future? They were worth that much on paper, much of it on borrowed money invested in property I assume and can't now live within their means through lack of forethought and a new economic reality that they can't adjust to...

The radio station was promptly turned off by the householder in disgust. She was expecting to be listening to Saturday View and hadn't heard of it's demise.
I've always thought of Bird as a spoofer (winging it, lol) when he was a reporter and the transformation to host hasn't changed that view much...

I know the last post on the thread's a bit old, but I wanted throw my tuppence in on "Saturday with Charlie Bird".

I was big fan of Saturday View and the serious analysis it gave of the week's news. I had no real experience of Charlie Bird before listening to yesterday's show, so had no preconceptions.

I thought the show was terrible and a blatant example of dumbing down. Charlie's delivery was clumsy; not good enough for an important slot like this. The discussion was rather poorly informed, populist and unbalanced. Most annoyingly, Bird switched between commentators very quickly, meaning the quickfire style only allowed for flimsy soundbites, rather than any serious substantial comment.

I know RTÉ are know for cack handed decision making, but getting rid of a good programme to make way for such poor quality is bizarre. I wrote to RTÉ to complain.

Does anybody understand why RTÉ have done this?
