    First off. If you have a Full Irish License you DO NOT need an IDP for Australia.

    Although If you feel you must then you can still buy one from the AA and it will cost you €10

    From the Department of Foreign Affairs for Australian Travel
    It is compulsory to carry your driver’s licence with you when driving, and there is a fine for not doing so. Check the insurance policy of any car you are driving, particularly if borrowing a car from a friend. You should be aware of the local speed limits, which are generally lower than in Ireland and are strictly enforced. Watch for signs warning of local wildlife which may be present on the roads and can cause serious injury in a collision.

    You don't need one.

    An international driving permit is only required if your licence isn't issued in English.

    The specifics vary from state to state, but none of them seem to require an IDP;

    General rule seems to be that if you're there to live permanently, you can drive on your Irish licence for 3 months, then you need an Oz licence. Otherwise you're OK, but again it varies from state to state.

    I'm off to NZ on Saturday and I did take the precaution of getting the permit. It's no load to carry and it's very easy to obtain through AA.

    They actually took 2 weeks to send back a query. I rang them and pointed out their shortcomings and I had the permit a day or two later.

    Waste of money, I've never had a problem even in non english speaking countries.

    The only country that insists on the IDP is Serbia and you really don't to drive there.

    For anywhere that understands English and recognises the EU licence the IDP is a waste of money.
