Fungus on leylandii

Hi All, I have a hedge of golden leylandii trees growing between my house and my neighbour. Over ¾ of it has gone a grey/green colour and seems to have some sort of dull powdery fungus is all I can describe it as, it is definitely killing the tree slowly, the tree seems to revert to just green and then the fungus appears on the stems and branches, can someone offer some advise as to how I can get rid of the fungus.
I like the leylandii trees so any advise that does not include cutting them down would be appreciated.

Hi Mick,

I have the golden leylandii hedge too also known as Leylandii Castlewellan Gold. My hedge has started to turn brown, is your hedge still green or is it turning brown too. I have been researching a little now and think it is an insect called Cypress Aphid or Cinara cupressi they are hard to see because of there size, but the tell-tail signs are sticky honeydew and a sooty fungus. Looks like you can spray the hedge with an insecticide, but the problem is it's very difficult to spay right into the center of the hedge and they breed very quickly about every 25 days. So spraying would need to be repeated to get the the next generation after 25 days again. Anyone knew more about this problem and be able to gave some advice so I can keep this hedge...
