Why would the wealthier bloke decide to go to prison ? ;)

The level of fine scale is actually a good idea, Some bloke working for Nokia ended up paying over €100.000 in Finland for speeding offences but Ireland aint Finland and there is no way it would ever be implemented here as it would affect the rich too much.

As for your stupid questions on compensation !! This thread is about fines which have nothing to do with compensation.

Of course I meant why should the person who cannot afford the fine go to jail?

You say that the fine scale idea as in Finland is good but say it wouldn't be implemented in Ireland because it would affect the rich too much. This is exactly my point. You cannot argue that the current system of court imposed fines in Ireland is fair while decrying the fact that a fairer system could not be implemented in Ireland because it would affect the rich.

As for my stupid questions on compensation I don't expect an answer.

OP, you completely missed the point of the programme.

The main point is that prisons are overcrowded as it is. A big percentage of the people in prisons are there for a few days for not paying fines. It's a waste of resources and tax-payers money to send them to prison and doesn't benefit anyone.
Giving them community service or the likes is still making them do the 'time', benefits their local area and doesn't take up space in the prisons.

How does putting them in prison help anyone? It's not gonna get the money off them. And they just spend a day or two in a cell and go home again. It's so pointless.

Thats what happens when you post 3 minutes into the section of the programme about imprisoning fine defaulters.

Should you only go to prison for non payment of fines if you are a repeat offender?

I think prison should be the very last option.
If you keep repeating the same offence the fines will go up and you will get disqualified from driving.
After all these chances prison is the only choice left.

prime time tonight, people convicted in court cant pay their fines.

well dont break the law then!!

one woman on, convicted of driving without insurance, fined 1000 euro.
wouldve been cheaper to pay the insurance wouldnt it????

if you cant do the time, dont do the crime, am i right?

True enough, t'was her own fault in the first place, no point moaning to Prime Time.

a thousand quid is a cheap fine, god forbid she hit a new Audi, then she'd really have something to complain about. :D
