You should have an, "I'm not an Irish citizen, I'd like to vote, but I can't," option.

I've lived in Ireland since the age of eleven and at this stage, I think I should be allowed to vote in Presidential Elections/Referenda. Anyone who has lived here for at least five years IMO. :)

One week and it will all be over

No more "assignation" attempts on Dana

No more debate on the history of MMCG

No more Norris fans claiming he's going to change the country in a largely ceremonial position, no more Norris shouting his way through interviews

No more Gallagher being linked to FF even though it's very clear he's very much a FF'er, again not that it would matter in practice given the largely ceremonial role

I can't wait til next Monday

No Sinn Féin candidate running either... But I think most reasonable people accept and acknowledge That Martin McGuinness is a Sinn Féin candidate! Seán Gallagher is in my opinion obviously the Fianna Fáil candidate.

I like many other Irish people used to support Fianna Fáil, never again. They are rotten!

eh.... you have been reading up on sean Gallagher have you not ?

remember the unionists would never say sinn fein with out also mentioning the IRA ?
well same rule applies here Sean Gallagher/FF
no one in their right mind believes that he is independent

so if he is so detached from FF , how come he was running dinner party's at 5000 a pop to meet brian cowan at the HEIGHT of the collapse ?

call him what you want but he is NOT A INDEPENDENT
and his line " i was proud to be a member of FF but those days are behind me " is rubbish - again a FF lackey proving his contempt for the intelligence of the Irish citizen

Dermott Mulqueen issues plea of support for Election day

In order to restore his good name Dermott Mulqueen has issued a plea to the public to write his name on the ballot paper, affix his picture and put a number 1 beside it. You have to admire his never say die attitude. If Ireland had more like him it would be a better place. His statement can be seen below.

but it does matter - he is spoofing as they all do
this man and FF should NEVER be elected into public office again
never - Christ are people that stupid so soon after the fact ?
ceremonial role or not - he showed his worth by turning his back on his buddy's because they are tainted ,
and trust me if he gets in , it will take the FF spin machine days to start trying to gain political capital off this , " oh the people are starting to forgive us " bull****

we are in receivership because of him and his FF buddy's and people want to elect him as first citizen ???

they should all be horse whipped on O'Connell st for public amusement

There's been something about Sean Gallagher that's been bugging me and until now I hadnt been able to figure out just what it was. Ignoring the fact that he is blatantly lying in every interview it's the fact that he's got the demenour of someone whom if you shook their hand you'd check that you still had your watch afterward.

I said "in practice" it would make no difference if he were elected

Not saying it would be morally right to elect someone with such close links to FF

come on now, are you serious?

enough of this FF bullshít. yes he was linked to them, but so was the majority of the people of ireland (surprise thats how they got elected!)

the same people FF bashing would also be the very same people who conviniently forgot that they voted for them only a few years ago.

seriously? will this be on going forvever? in 2018 will we be saying "x" voted for fianna fail in 1994, therefore we cant elect him or her?

people pulling at straws trying to shake him off the polls, which he his leading by a long shot.

if you want to bring up political connections, there are much more serious and worrying ones to be found with a certain martin mcguiness. why is it that the same Fianna Gael people bashing Gallagher, wont even support their own candidate? talk about turning backs on their buddy because he is tainted...

so youre suggesting that the majority of the country arent eligible for election because they at one stage voted for Fianna Fail in the last ten years?

Where is the 'I am Irish born but not currently resident in Ireland therefore I cannot vote for the President' option?

I have to say, I'm suprised McGuinness is at the top of the poll. While I know a boards.ie opinion poll will contain a disproportionate number of intellictuals and socialists, I thought McGuinness would be flagging behind Higgins and (possibly) Norris. The question is, however, does this reflect a general population poll? Quite possibly Davis will do better than suggested, and Dana will get 3% or so out of pity, but has McGuinness re-entered the race with Sean Gallagher's deminishing support?

No i really wouldn't pay too much attention to the poll.

Generally Sinn Fein have a high amount of supporters who are on fora promoting the message and voting on polls such as above.

    It's similar on p.ie

I do however struggle to see that Sean G will get 40% of the votes on the day, think it will be something much nearer 30% and he will have to hope he can hold on to a 5% lead over Higgins through the transfer process

That is what I thought. There does seem to be a lot of propaganda in the air in regards to SF and Martin Mcguinness.

Gallagher seems to have done well when you consider people link him towards Fianna Fail which is apparently a sin?

There is far more too it than linking him to FF.

He is a stereotype of what went wrong in Ireland over the last 10 years.

RE: MMG being on top of the poll...

If I'm right, he's led the poll in the early hours several times. I don't know if it's cause his hardcore voters vote quickly and the more casuals vote later or what it is, but I've seen it happen a few times now. Watch as time goes on the gap will shrink. Wait till a few hundred votes have been cast before we make judgements...

so youre suggesting that the majority of the country arent eligible for election because they at one stage voted for Fianna Fail in the last ten years?

eh sorry but HOW did you get those nuggets of wisdom from what i said ???

first point , sure lots of people voted ff but they were not in public office taking back handers and giving the two fingers 2 the public

second , i NEVER voted FF and have " always bashed them " for a reason because they are criminals - this guy is associated with criminals - you may have voted for them but i did not - so dont put that on me ta very much
im old enough to remember ALL THE OTHER SCANDALS they have been involved in

third point , yes we should never forget what that bunch of thieving bastards done to our republic , because of there actions this country of ours is close to failing DONT EVER FORGET IT , they should teach it in school

and as for MMG i was not talking about him , and yes i have opinions about him also but we were talking about SG - and HIS strong ties to the group of gangsters that have ****ed up this country - the smell off him is pungent
and repugnant - i NEVER said the majority are not eligible to vote or anything of the sort - i dont care who they voted for in the past - ITS THE FUTURE IM CONCERNED ABOUT

as for you prediction on the polls you may be correct and yes he may even win - does not make it right or change one fact - FF lackey is all he is

as for me trying to turn the polls ???? are you for real ???
i hold infinite power in my own head but in fairness very few people take any notice of me -but if anyone does,

MAKE SURE SG DOES NOT GET YOUR VOTE - anyone else will do nicely :D

This question may have come up before but I think it's interesting.

Does anyone think that senior (or other) members of the defence forces or gardai would have a serious issue with Martin McGuiness as President? I'm thinking especially senior defence forces staff who have long memories and would have to deal with him as a commander in chief.

Would it even cause resignations? (or would the lure of a pension prevent that?)

I'd imagine anyone in our security services thinking of voting MMG will have done a lot of soul searching before doing so.

Whilst I won't be voting for SG I'd have him down as the most charismatic of the 7 candidates by a long way.
Definitely the only one I'd be happy to sit with down the pub for a few hours.

Gallagher easing to victory it would seem :(

    The Irish Times Poll: Gal 40% (+20); Hig 25 (+2); McG 15 (-4); Nor 8 (-3); Mit 6 (-3); Dav 3 (-9); Dana 3 (no change

If Gallagher gets elected I hope FG and Labour really goes to town and hammer Ireland and our people they have the majority and the five years to do it, I think people in this country are retarded and FG should effectively institute a pogrom against Fianna Fail and make the people realise what will happen if you keep voting for scum like Gallagher. If he was in Libya or Tunisia he would have been one of the first ones to be shot dead by the people there.

For 800 years we were kicking the sh1t out of the English and our own Protestants, we get Independence thanks to the forefathers of the modern Labour, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein parties and then almost immediately the anti-treayites (Fianna Fail's ancestors) start a civil war which resulted in more Irish deaths than in the war of Independence against the British to begin with.

What followed was 90 years of almost uninterrupted Fianna Fail corruption which kept the population poor and destitute, now Fianna Fail bankrupted the country transferring over €200 billion to their connected cronies to be re-paid by you the public taxpayer for the next 50 years. Three Generations of Irish people have had their hopes and dreams wiped out, people in their thirties are clinging on, those in their twenties are totally wiped out and teenagers have nothing ahead of them. Fianna Fail destroyed Ireland and now they have the cheek to send in a Trojan Horse in the form of Gallagher to take the presidency and coupled with their propaganda arms RTÉ and the Independent they look like they will fool the entire country to vote for them again.

They won't fool me and if Irish people are so stupid to vote for FF again then they deserve to be raped and pillaged like this and as far as I am concerned if our democracy is reduced to the fact that one political party can bribe and buy elections through media controlled propaganda then please would some-one hand back the keys to the Queen and lets re-unite with the UK as our democracy and Independence has been squandered by the people themselves and their ignorance.

We should never forget what Fianna Fail have done to the country. Ever.

And we owe it to future generations to remind them just what a clusterfck Fianna Fail have left us in. Many times.
