It's kind of funny, in a not so funny way, that Season 1 had the well documented screw up on sound and now Season 2 is going to have overly viewable model ships.

Edit: My Blu-Rays came today :)

say whaaat. how did you get it already  its not released until 10th dec

No Season 1, just updating from my post above about ordering.
Lack of clarity due to enthusiasm about arrival.

Lower the shields & cancel Red Alert.

Just finished Encounter at Farpoint and wow that was good, it actually felt like watching a new fresh episode rather then a re-watch.

I felt the same, it feels totally different watching in HD, after years of smudge & blur

When Tasha Yar attacks the Solider that shoots at her feet during the Q trial the person doing that attacking is now so much clearer that it appears to be a stunt double.

I think this says it all as to the difference between season one and two's special effects:

    Season one:

    Season two:

    :(

Ouch! Thats pretty stark isn't it :(

What a balls up to make, of all the shows.

How the hell did that pass quality control, it looks like a badly sharpened DVD release.

Jesus the more I look at it, the worse it gets. It's barely any better than the dvd. The ship itself is a blurred & smudged mess compared to the S1 shot

If you think thats bad look at this:

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images_s2review/wheresilence_probe.jpg

    it looks so very fake!

this is one of my faves to show how laughable the effort that went into the second season is

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images_s2review/review14.jpg

the light is coming from the right onto the planet, but is coming from the left across the ships.

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images_s2review/review22.jpg

this isnt sooo bad, but still - it looks kinda blurry.

i dont like this either, its lacks the detail and POP that FX from season one had.

    THIS I LOVE:

All in all, the effects are very underwhelming.

thats what you get for outsourcing CBS!

1; Looks like something made on DX11 for high end gaming graphics.
2; Lacks a lot of Enterprise detail.
3; Not sure, ships look very like models but it might be down to still image.
4; Again lacking detail, might be the image but doubtful looking at the Deflector.
5; That cube done to the standards of Season 1 would have knocked me off my seat.

Ah cmon, there no way thats a model. Thats way too fake to be a model, it has to be an artistic rendition or something,

Barely looks any different to the dvd...and far from 1080p. The shuttle really looks like a toy in that shot too.

this isnt sooo bad, but still - it looks kinda blurry.

The nose of the Warbird looks nice, the starboard nacelle area though is still a blurred mess. The Enterprise isn't much better than dvd quality there either.

Looks pretty cack alright...the deflector looks touched up, not much else.

The inside of a Cube in HD...how could it possibly be bad

    Not happy! :(

I had a similar thought on the Farpoint planet being a watercolour or something artistically done, at least it looked good.

the more I look at these stills the more pissed off I become.

Most fans would have happily waited another six months for CBS to do things PROPERLY & CONSISTENTLY!

Its all money saving no doubt, very disappointing. How they signed off on this beggars belief. We've waited this long, why not just do the job right once & for all?

I just hope seasons 3-7 remain consistent and at the level season 1 recieved.

whats the point in remastering if quality is going to be uneven from season to season?????

Yeah its fairly unprofessional. Are they gonna do S3 in-house now did you mention?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 894 ✭✭✭filmbuffboy

    Season 3 inhouse.

Season 4 - apparently is going to be outsourced to same company that did 2.

    Season 5 - inhouse.

    Season 6 - outsourced.

    Season 7 - inhouse.

i dont know how definite this is. this is what ive been reading from fan comments on trekcore.

apparently theres been rumours that theyve cut ties with the outsourced company but not sure how true that is either.

it would be HORRIFIC if part one of BOBW in season 3 got the royal treatment and then given the part 2 in season 4 was given the same level of care as season 2.

time will tell anyways but CBS are said to read fan comments on trekcore so im leaving a strong message that if they quality for future seasons is as season 2 is then I WONT BE BUYING. and i mean that.

id rather watch the dvds. theyre crappy but at least, consistently so!

    dont quote me on that.

ive read conflicting reports online, some saying CBS have cut ties with the outsourced company. some saying that they still have a contract with them. time will tell anyways.

im holding final judgement until i see season 2 in motion. it might not be half as bad when the pics are moving.

trekcore said the quality is a mixed bag, but that the most important episodes were given extra care and attention.

its still not good enough though considering the EPICNESS of season one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭downwithpeace

There might be some toss up on CBS finance bosses on having to pay out a contract cancellation fee with the Season 2 HD creators or just going with it knowing the quality reduction could cost them on units sold.

At the end of the day, they're not cheap for the consumer so quality should be a vocal concern.

Aside from excessive DNR, those upscaled shots (like the one of the shuttle) don't look so bad. I'd rather they use the original elements as much as possible, even if it means working off video mastertapes. Re-creating shots using CGI is always going to produce potentially dodgy results no matter who is doing them. I don't really care the CGI replacement stuff in season 1. It looks too good.

There's a marked reduction in quality when comparing the two, season 1 simply looks far superior...cgi or no cgi :(

blu-ray.com have their review of season 2 up. interesting to compare it to trekcore's review of same.

    Season one:

    http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=30939&position=7

    Season two:

    http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=44210&position=5

says it all really. season two as can be seen from the stills still looks great on the whole. its just a pity it wasnt given that extra little love season one got.

still looking forward to getting it though!!!

first day off i have after exams im having a friend over and were watching as much of it as we can in a day! :D

Its been confirmed by TrekCore that HTV, the company CBS hired to outsource the effects work on season 2, will NOT be re-hired for future seasons.

Whats puzzling is that TrekCore have mentioned that CBS have hired a different outsourced company to work on Season 4.

I just hope its not a repeat of the same, again!

Hopefully the company used has some high standard past experience, be nice too if they're Trek fans.
