2+1 locations include a section between Mallow and Cork and also in Monaghan. These roads are road safety disasters and no more will be built. That is now NRA policy. Instead, 2+2 roads will replace existing N road stretches. A 2+2 looks like this.

I know the one on the N20 from Rathduff to Mallow. Those chained centre dividers could be a menace to motorcyclists in the event of an accident. They may not cause the accident itself but they will make it a lot worse if the rider gets thrown off into them .

Edit: Kbannon beat me to it on the motorbike bit...

I'm amazed that nobody's commented on the proposed expansion of the 20mph zones in cities!

I'm wondering, if given a vote, would you guys prefer the current situation, or would you be happy to trade a higher motorway speedlimit for 30kmph zones in all the major town/city centres (and an expansion of the Dublin zone)?

the N20 2+1 isnt a road safety disater, it has in fact saved lives. That section was notorious for cars turning right being rear ended and that doesnt happen anymore. What it is, is a trafffic flow disaster...one slow vehicle and you all queue behind it in the "1" section and the "2" sections at 1km are way to short for safety and only allow a handful of cars to overtake. With a little extra spending, this section could easily be converted to 2+2 but that would involve someone admitting what a disaster it is.

As regards the wire barriers, I doubt that the outcome would be much different if a biker hit one at speed than if he hit a concrete barrier. At least the wire barrier is desgned to collapse which the concrete isnt. Mind you , a long section on the N20 has beeen collapsed for months with no sign of remedial work

20 mph in Dublin would be hard to acheive...:D

I think there would be a fair bit of difference. A biker coming off a bike wont be hitting the wall at 90 degrees, but will be travelling almost parallel to it, so is likely to glance off it, so the wall itself is not a major danger.

The dangers the biker faces are of course still very serious, from falling onto the road at speed, and other vehicles when he/she falls, but having them wire barriers with their posts are going to remove any chance the biker has should they slide into one of them posts at speed.
