You will probably have to talk to your IT department or someone in UCC to get permission. I think you use your student email address or something but you may have to ask for permission first. (I think) - it's been a few years.

Its pretty simple.

1. Go to https://www.dreamspark.com/default.aspx and sign in with your Windows Live ID

Then verify your student status by using your college email address.

And finally, start downloading.

Yeah as long as Dreamspark recognises your college, it's fairly easy. Pretty sweet getting Visual Studio 2010 for free!

You are getting a gimped version for free. It can't even open multiple projects in a solution. Useless for most commercial development, which is the entire point ofc.

If it's c++ you want to do, eclipse is a fully featured IDE that is free.

edit: https://www.dreamspark.com/products/Product.aspx?ProductId=29 = express version = gimped. Do they offer pro version too?
moar edit: They do! https://www.dreamspark.com/products/Product.aspx?productid=25

Make sure you download the pro version. Why they even have the express version on that site I do not know.... anyone can download that for free, even non-students.

You need a student email but I always thought the college must submit your student email address to Dreamspark to be eligible (for example just computing students). It's a good offer!

From what I understand, you only need a Live@Edu e-mail address. I was able to log in and get verified by logging in with my college e-mail during the summer (since I was previously in LIT doing a different course, but still had my account details) so I could get VS2010 and try and figure it out in preparation for this year.

I got in with my @gcd.ie address. As long as your college is recognised by MS, you get it. If my college is, I'd say most are :pac:

Ok that is hilarious. I just used my 10+ years old college unix mail account to sign up :D

I use the express version here and I've got two project files within one solution..

Try having a c++ and c# project in one solution. You will run into limitations. Also many plugins don't work with express.

Not quite sure exactly what the limitation is, but my current stuff will not build with express. It just says "cannot open project", for a mixed c++/c# solution.
