Speech and Language Therapy

    Hey Everyone!
    I am in fifth year and just wondering if there is anyone out there who is a speech and language therapist who would be able to give me an overview of what the course is like and the job itself? :)

    I am also wondering if you can be a speech and language therapist but specialise in music and/or drama therapy? I love Music and drama and would love to be able to incorporate it into this job.

    Any further details about this area of work would be greatly appreciated. :)

    Hello!
    I am NEARLY finished my Msc in Speech and Language Therapy! I am studying at the University of Essex in h England-it's a very intensive course but I love it. It's very rewarding. I am also a Speech and Drama teacher, there is massive overlap between speech and drama and speech and language therapy especially when working with people with voice problems. I'd recommend you do as many speech and drama examinations with the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) RIAM has the best syllabus and is more academic than the rest. I also wouldn't recommend that you go straight into a degree in speech and language therapy. It's intense, can be emotionally challenging and requires a bit of life experience first. I work with a lot of people who are terminally ill-this is very rewarding but it can take it's toll! I'd recommend a degree in Linguistics from UCD, do your drama exams with RIAM and then do your post grad. It'll be five years in total but hey your young, you'll learn so much and it'll also give the economy a bit of time to pick up before your qualified!
