Lead Pulling Correcters

I have a 1 year old Boxer who has filled out muscle wise massively in the last month. And while most of the time he is very good on the lead and stays by my side or at the very least leaving slack on the lead when he see's other dogs he literally just wants to run over and play with them.

Yesterday I took him walking in the woods and came across a man walking his three JRT's before I knew what was happening they were around snapping at my fella, barking and growling. I was so mad because if my dog ran over to another dog walker and started snapping, growling and barking at them I would be told that he is a dangerous dog. But because JRT's are little this is supposedly okay. Luckily my dog is well socialised but even he was taken a back he was literally surrounded at all sides by these three dogs. I was too busy trying to keep him under control and try and get past these little monsters to say anything to the man but he eventually called them. But while all this was happening my fella was jerking every which way to try and get away from them.

Then last night I got a pain in my shoulder, this has happened before, however not nearly as bad, a few hours after we come home from a walk where he has pulled to go and see another dog and can last up to a day or two. And while I am working on the issue I really don't want to be doing damage to myself so I was thinking of getting a Halti, Gentle Leader or Canny Collar. Let me just clarify that this is a temporary measure as he is just too strong for me when he does get lost in the excitement and pull.

Are these any good?, I would preferably like one that is most comfortable for my dog whilst we are training through the issue. Also as he is a short nosed breed would that make any difference in what type I should buy?

You have to remember that he is only 1 , still very young and mad to play .

I prefer to take the dogs attention away from the distraction and focus on me , e.g about turn , sit , heel ...praise . Speeding up the pace . Producing his/her favourite toy . Get him to sit until the other dog passes him then give him a treat .
The trick is to distract him before he gets too excited.

I'm not well up on the collar scene but i'm sure you'll get loads of suggestions here , best of luck :)

Thanks I will try the toy and see how it goes, I have tried a couple of other things but the issue is he is just a very social dog and he just wants to go up and say hello to other dogs and then play with them, so I am trying to find something that grabs his attention enough and keeps him motivated. I have tried a few different types of treats, ones that he doesn't get often or has never had and made sure they were especially tasty. So far no real luck in grabbing his attention for any real length time, the most I can get out of him is 2 to 3 seconds at the moment.

But it is a work in progress, and really it's not the largest issue in the world and for still being so young he is wonderful and an absolute sweetheart. I know we will get there in the end. But I like to take him for a good walk every day after college but sometimes my arm is too sore if we have a had a bad day and then when my arm is rested the next day he is rearing to go and mad to get into everything so it can be a little bit like a vicious circle. I want to get the collar so he can be exercised every day whilst our training continues. Because we both win that way.

    The canny collar is excellent.

Like Shammy said time and training will take care of it in the long term but the advantages of the canny collar is that you can start the walk with it as a flat collar and convert it to the head collar during the walk if your boxer is acting the maggot or your back is sore and change it back to a flat collar if he's being good again. That way they don't learn that they can pull if they have a flat collar on but not a head collar. Dogs are tricksy creatures!

Have you tried a Halti ?I had to get one for my boxer as my shoulder was in bits he pulls so much.I couldnt believe the diffference with the Halti on.My 9 year old daughter walked him the other day and he didnt pull once (and yes I was right beside them :) ).Think it was about 14 euro

yeqah the halti is good, takes away the dogs desire to pull as it makes the dog feel uncomfortable and acts as a sort of horse lead, I use the dogmatic, its like the halti but made from leather and costs around €35, but I dont like how it creases up my dogs face. It works like a charm and I rotate between normal lead walks and head collar walks, when on normal walks my dog can almost pull me down the road with the head collar he walks beside me, a little fight for the first 5 mins out the door but after that its plain sailing.

Canni Collars work very well. I prefer them to the Halti headcollar. However they don't tend to work terribly well with boxers in my experience as they can be pushed off their noses very easily.

I would look at the Halti harness or Easy walker harness if you want to use an aid to help with pulling.

Thanks I had never even heard of the harnesses and I think that's the way I will go, the easy walk looks especially good. I would be much happier using a harness and I know he will too, people already cross the road when they see us coming because they think he looks like a cross dog, I can't imagine what the would do if they saw him with something that looks like a muzzle on. Thanks again.
