Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi guys

I have a TY SPHE class and am looking for a few ideas for classes. I have a few prepared on issues such as diet/food, depression/suicide, drugs, etc.

Has anybody any other suggestions? I am struggling for a few ideas. Have been searching the net and talking to people but need some more help...

    Thanks in advance

Try to get guest speakers in. The HSE might have people available (assuming they don't ring in sick! :)) Always disliked teaching the oul SPHE classes meself!

Hi, sounds like you've loads of topics ready to go already! Saw something interesting on yahoo earlier, about a new programme being introduced in the UK I think. It is all about self-esteem, particularly for young girls, and uses a lot of magazines with before and after pictures of airbrushing. The example given in the article was the pictures Britney Spears released of her Candy photoshoot before and after airbrushing.

I know in my school one of my colleagues did something similar with the Senior Cycle students last year and they were amazed at the difference in how the models looked, and really had no idea of the extent of the airbrushing. She felt it was so worthwhile and the students really got into it.

I was asked to do a talk with a school in our area, I work as a pharmacist. This is the resource I used and it developed into a full module as part of the TY programme. If you don't want to present it yourself, then your local pharmacist might be able to help you out.

what about a bit of rse? - sexual health, contraception, pregnancy etc
esp with the popularity of "16 and pregnant" on tv at the mo' - a lot of that agegroup may be watching it.
i had an off the cuff discussion one day with my ty's re breastfeeding - don't ask me how we got started but they were really up for talking about it. and i think this week is breastfeeding promotion week or month or something like that.
(just be careful in case of any post JC celebration ''accidents'' - i once had to teach an rse module to ty's and there were two girls pregnant as a result of over excessive celebrations shall we say. tough situation)
depending on the religious ethos of your school, but if its a catholic ethos school, cura etc are usually willing to come and give a talk.
maybe in the run up to xmas, do a bit on social awareness around the cost/excessiveness around the holidays and link up with svp or another charity like the shoe box appeal etc if they're not already operating in your school.
    hth good luck with it!

PM me with your email address. I taught it a couple of years ago and have a rough scheme that may give you some ideas. I also teach Social Ed for LCA and found the book for that subject really helpful for TY. I found over the years that many of the TYs didn't go on to do LCA.
