Questions About Working In Software In Dublin...

    Hi all,

As someone not from Ireland originally, I was hoping someone could answer some questions I have about how things typically work in the software industry here.

When a company says they pay '40k euro' and offer 'health and dental' insurance; does that mean you get paid 40k euro per year and also receive free health and dental insurance. Or do you still need to pay each month for health and dental insurance? More specifically it says, 'Company Plan extra level 2'.

Also, what is the role of recruiters here? Does that impact the salary you might receive, or do the recruiters get paid separately from what you might get?

Finally, can someone briefly explain what it means if it says 'Pension contribution is 15%'? Is a pension a private savings/investment fund that can be accessed any time? Or is it more complicated than that?

40K a year means your Gross pay per year is 40,000 euro.

'health and dental' normally means that the company pays but you are liable for BIK on the amount they pay plus the Universal Social charge is also payable on this.

A recruiter gets a percent of the salary of the person who is hired and is paid by the company. It does not impact your salary. So if a recruiter is on 10% and you get a job for 40K the company pays the recruiter 4k.

'Pension contribution is 15%'. Hmm that could mean several things, the company pays 15% of your salary to a pension for you (unlikely), may mean they match up to 15%, etc

Just one addition to make, sometimes it is possible to negotiate a higher salary, because you didn't come via a recruiter. I.e. if the job is advertised as 40K, and the company is budgeting for 4k for the recruiter, if you see the same job advertised, not via a recruiter, you may be able to negotiate a little more.

Your salary is €40,000 per year, the health and dental is private but you still pay monthly insurance contributions that will be taxed through you monthly salary. The company plan extra 2 is just the level of cover that you have with the insurance company. Just like when you insure your car there are different levels of insurance that you can choose e.g. windscreen cover, road side assistance, comprehensive or third party. Private health insurance is similar only you may have a private room in a hospital as opposed to roadside assistance for your car :)

15% of pension means that your employer will contribute 15% of you gross salary into a private pension scheme. In you case that would be €6000. This is tax free but you won't be able to touch the cash until you reach retirement age.

The recruiters role is between the recruiter and the employer this won't impact on you other than finding you a job.

Overall, a full time job with a €40K salary plus health, dental and pension is not bad in today's market.
