UK October heat record smashed

    The 29.4C record has been broken in the last hour or so at Gravesend - and could go higher still given the time of day:eek:


    Regionally the Welsh record has also gone with Hawarden in North Wales up at 28.6C in the last hour.:cool:

    PS: In many ways it makes today even more depressing here:(

    Just on the Charlie Tango DX group [in the UK] and they've closed up for the after noon with over 100°F in their shacks.

    October UK Record Temperatures

    The maximum daily temperature record for the UK as a whole for October has been broken with 29.9C recorded at Gravesend at 14:42 BST. The previous record value was reported at March in Cambridgeshire on 1st October 1985. The Wales maximum temperature value for October has also been exceeded with Hawarden reporting 28.2C at 14:12 BST. The previous was 26.4C at Ruthin in Denbighshire (1st October 1985). Issued at 1915 on Sat 01 Oct 2011.

    One explanation for the phenomenon was the large amount of earthworks in connection with High Speed 1, which had exposed a great deal of the local sandy soil, which absorbed more sunshine.

    Sandy soil heats quickly at the top be it exposed or under a carpet of grass.
