Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Trying to do a bit of research on Irish owned family businesses

    Came across this photo here

    http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000034884/Holdings#tabnav

And wondering if anyone knows if it was Irish and family owned?

Does anyone else have any links to other photos like this? Family outside a business in Ireland.

    Thanks
    :)

That is a regular Liptons shop, manager & staff, one of the branches that opened when Thos Lipton expanded into Ireland. His first shop was in Glasgow, opened 1871-ish, he was born in Glasgow, family moved there from Down/Monaghan after the Famine. Lots of books on him, his business and the Americas Cup. Alec Waugh )Brother of Evelyn) wrote a biography.

    Thanks for that. Good info.

Any ideas on where I could find more photos like that?

Lawrence Collection & others. Obtain reference no.s by research here http://www.nli.ie/en/PDBLawrS.aspx , write down numbers and then go look-up. Somebody here will verify, but I think it has moved from the NLI to a 'branch' in Temple Bar.

Cool cheers for that. I've contacted them about possibly using one of their photos.

We need a photograph for a book cover. And if the image is of a building in *Ireland with people standing outside I need to make sure that the actual business was started by an Irish family.

    *edit location

OK- I have moved this thread to the photography forum as there is more chance of success there. The folks there may have better sources for images of this kind. They may also resent looking for a free image (if thats what you are after) :D. You should clarify who you mean by 'we'.

Link will remain in H&H forum also.

Thanks. I wasn't sure which one would be best.

Is it for the cover of a local history book or is a 'for profit' venture?

It's a book that will be on sale. There'll be 1500 copies printed. If you have an image and want to send a lo-res sample please do. Pricing can be discussed if the image is acceptable.

Reason for my question was that the National Photograph Archive (part of NLI) are very decent to deal with on permissions for use of a photo in a not-for-profit/charitable locally-produced history.

Sorry, I've no image. It is unlikely that you would get a good quality image from that era outside of a specialist collection. Suggest you set out your case to the NPA and see how much it woul cost.

    Thanks I'll look into it.

Want to get the rights to the image and if I have to pay then so be it.

If I can get the original then I can have it scanned properly and cleaned up, which I can do myself.

Do it for a living. Scanned 1,200 images for a book before. That was a fun project.
