"This is not for the good of the women this is for the good of the HSE"..

ah get off your soap box Joe... The Croke Park Agreement means they cant make the necessary cuts to pay so othey have to make the changes somewhere... People in the HSE on six figures sums like Joe Duffy, milking the system, are part of the reason there is no money for other people in society

Is Joe asking why the patients aren't interested in the TV?
    Sure it's probably only RTÉ!!

there seems to be nothing to do in these places except smoke, which is also bad for their health

"could yiz not make a cup of tea for yerselves?"

I think we would all go a bit funny if we had to spend a week in those conditions

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭syklops

What exactly is Joe hoping to get from all this.

I mean I know its very sad, but this woman was in there because she was self harming. So you cant have too much privacy because they need to be able to see what your doing.

You cant have the telly on a table, it has to be high up because someone might break the glass and use it to harm them selves.

Its sad, conditions are terrible, but whats the alternative?

[QUOTE=JonathanAnon;75960653 The Croke Park Agreement means they cant make the necessary cuts to pay........[/QUOTE]

Anyone hear Mattie McGrath on the box last night saying the Croke Park Agreement needs to be scaled down to Aviva Stadium proportions !

I don't normally agree with Mattie, but I had a good laugh at that one. :)

Seriously, if kept in a locked ward like that, especially when not used to it... Their minds could even get worse and more damaged :(

I think Joe's whole approach to this subject is wrong.. You'd swear the State was holding these people against their will for the State's own interest, like the way Stalin used to send people he didnt like to the gulags..

Even the people ring in admit that they werent well enough to be allowed free... There is no immediate cure for most mental afflictions, the familes are incapable of caring for the individuals, so it falls back on the State to provide care...

To be fair to him, he's trying to paint a picture of what it's like under secure conditions, for those of us who'll never have the pleasure.
Ultimately I think he wants to point out the injustice of placing non risk patients into a secure ward, possibly leaving them at risk from other patients and also depriving them of their liberty at a time like chritsmas.

Don;t know what good it'll do, perhaps apply pressure in the right places and have this decision reversed...
