I am really shocked and horrified by some of the comments on here about severe mental illness by total ignorant people, all I can say is walk a day in my shoes and you will know the devastation caused by schizophrenia and bipolar and the bucketful of medication that I have to take morning, noon and night and over 60 ECT treatments I have had to undergo and that was only in the past 8 years, although I have had this illness over 20 years now.

I am disgusted by these comments. This is worse than stigma.

I'm thinking of doing a version of the second ad, with a machine gun... I find the second ad almost completely indiscernible... you would wonder why they let it air, the message is confusing ... in a stupid voice and two languages..

You're sort of proving my point. If someone so much as questions the "depression epidemic" they get treated like a pariah.

We need to be more honest about it really, rather than speaking in hushed tones and "ah, sure the poor lad is not well"-ing every time someone even suggests they might be a bit depressed.

Hold on a second. Where I'm I treating you like a pariah I'm not saying that there are people who perhaps say they are depressed when it's not proven. But schizophrenia and manic depression are diagnosed via diagnostic tests.

Is that the shoe shop? Sure last time I heard him on the radio he was going to be bankrupt the following week or something. That was well over a year ago IIRC.

    George the Butcher on Mooney

Its a friggin disgrace the way Mooney shamlessly promotes the bastardisation of the original song on his show.

I wouldn't worry. Most reasonable people realise that the majority of mental illnesses have a physiological grounding, no different from any other kind of disease. Advances in neurology continue to demonstrate that what was once thought to reside in the mind or the character is largely influenced by the chemistry of the brain.

To argue that the mentally ill are in general weak or culpable is ignorant and scientifically inaccurate. Most sufferers of mental illness are unlucky, nothing else, no different to any other biological imbalance.

The Great Man just on RC giving his preamble.

Having a go at the proposed €100 Household Charge today, presumably to beef up his "Socialist" credentials.

Wonder would the subject of how an annual RTE Licence Fee of €160 that this overpaid Disciple of Connolly paradoxically justifies get past the researchers?

Considering that (afaik) it's proposed to eventually merge these Charges in the not-too-distant future, might be interesting to get Joes' take on "anudder unjustifiable stealth tax on de most vunerable peeple by the gubbermint". Bet he won't be long shutting his trap if they are merged.

I wont be paying this household charge. Mostly because I dont live within the state nor own a house but thats a side issue.

No offence to other liveline listening boardsies who will have to pay the tax but I don't have a lot of sympathy for people complaining about it. I read all over boards "have nothing left, cant feed kids etc". We are talking about 2 euros a week. Just like the Television license you will probably be able to pay it off week by week. If they said nothing about it and added it on to the ESB bill every month most people wouldn't even notice it.

The most vulnerable in society line, is getting very tired when you use it to describe people who own houses or who are paying off mortgages.

The state broadcaster is seriously going to have people on complaining about a €100 charge on owning a house and receiving a water supply when the self-same broadcaster receives funding from a €160 charge on owning a goddamn television?

You can't pay off your tv licence by the week can you? You have to have a licence, so while you can save up for your next one by paying stamps or whatever, at some point you have to put up the full amount in one go.

We're run by Europe, and these people's priority is making sure that 50% of the puppet Government is women... have these idiots got no perspective at all?

You can do the stamps buying thing. You also have the option of getting shot of your telly... not really an option with a house.

The "it's only €2 a week" is a bit of a tired argument...sure you can break any annual charge down to it's weekly total.
I think what I have most against this is it's a flat fee across the board, despite your means, size of family, value of property, employment status...okay so they need to draw up a proper system and also need the money yesterday...why not cut welfare by a small margin and a small income tax raise, instead of this stealth bullsh*t? There's less actual impact on people and you don;t give people a chance to dodge it or make it an issue of protest.

I think the flat charge is to protect Fine Gael's interests. They don't want their well-off voters angered by having to pay more. The tax side of the budget "the best budget for developers in years" made that clear.

No. You can pay it in arrears. You go into the Post Office and get the stamp book. After the first payment you get a license, and you can go in every week or so and get another stamp.

You think cutting social welfare and a 'small' increase in income tax wouldn't give people a chance to make an issue out of it? If they had done that then we would be onto week two of the budget moaning with everyone bearing the brunt. Both people in employment and not.

This tax is paid by home owners. Be out of work, or be struggling to pay bills and I will feel sorry for you, but I wont feel sorry for the security you have of having your own roof above your head, and for that you now have to pay a small premium.

I don't find it surprising that people are angry their meagre incomes are being depleted to fund the transfer of hundreds of millions to unsecured bondholders. The best economists in the country are infuriated by the economic illiteracy of the policy. It's also bad for the domestic economy as that's 100 euro less disposable income people have to spend in local businesses.
