100,000 additional applications this year. There's you problem.

As someone who has had to work for everything i have this entire topic is enraging me. A country of entitled arseholes complaining about a slight delay in their free stuff.

Absolutely. People should be reasonable. 100000 application is quite a backlog. But instead of being grateful for the dig out they escalate things thereby generating a greater backlog

Your right we should let them just die. I do wonder about the average IQ of posters on this site at times.

I've had issues myself with getting a medical card. Since August. Now between rent, specialist appointments, cost of drugs, and cigarettes (i smoke alot, my disorder is anxiety related), i have lost what savings i had, and now i am in a position, at the age of 31, of probably asking my parents can i move back with them, i'm not sure yet if i'll be able to keep up the specialist visits, the medication is also expensive but at least i have the DPS card with caps the cost at 132 a month. The stresses of money haven't helped too much, i get a disability payment, but it's not really enough. I'm hopeful the social services might be able to help me, today i've sent a covering letter with a piece of documentation i wasn't asked for originally, but anyway i've sent it in now. A medical card would help relieve the financial stress a bit, but i'm just worried that i might be waiting another 5 or 6 weeks to hear back from them again, this has happened twice already, my next specialist appointment is in a few weeks and that and the medication will come to nearly 300 euro. I've tried calling them before and it didn't help, well it didn't speed things up. I find it quite frustrating. I have a condition, but i'm doing all i can from a self help point of view to help get myself back on a solid footing. I feel i have come on from when i first realised things weren't right and sought the help. But now the finances are a big worry. If anyone has any ideas to where i might be able to get some assistance, i would really appreciate it, if all else fails i could ask my parents, but i'd rather not have put them under that burden if at all possible

And condolences to that man on the radio, and may his daughter rest in peace

Or they could just temporarily pay for their own medication to save their own lives.

Talk to your community welfare officer, they can tide you over til the card comes through.

Talk to MABS if you need budgeting advice, I hear they are very good.

The cost of reviewing and re-issuing them must be enormous. Considering the country has about 5 million in it, issuing a medical card to everyone the day they are born and allowing it expire the day they die could actually save money.
