Found the following in my postbox on Monday.

    176887.jpg

I have also heard of at least one other neighbour complaining about the same. I've emailed Alan's office today to make them aware.

Anyone else seen such volumes or was it just a lazy delivery person?

I'd be inclined to err on the side of a lazy delivery person.

Would definitely recommend you get a "no junk mail" sign for your door as it limits the amount of these leaflets you get. I rarely if ever get any since we stuck ours on.

That is apart from the odd "charity" collection sticker. Oh yes and the intelligent delivery guy working on behalf of Apache last week who read the sign and interpreted it as no junk mail IN my door and who instead left the leaflet on the door step.

Pity the no junk mail doesn't work for presidental election material, just got my first flyer from Michael D. Can I send back to sender ?

Pity the no junk mail stickers don't read 'No junk mail, please'.

Politeness seems to be a forgotten virtue in Irish society these days.

Some of my collegues are not happy with any of these signs up at all.

The publicity Post as opposed to junk mail makes up an important of some postmens wages. Each one of these signs that go up is money out of your postmans pocket. An Post is obliged to deliver all addressed items of mail to all address in the country, these other companies cherry pick and take on big estates and lump loads of junk in together.

Perhaps a sign "An Post" items only.

The problem arose when companies specialising in leaflet delivery started to put 5 or 6 items through letter box's at a time.

But aren't postmen paid a set salary irrespective of how much mail they have to deliver? I'm sure mail volumes for any given neighbourhood fluctuates on a weekly basis. It would be hard to believe a postman's salary would fluctuate in tandem

PS - re the No Junk Mail sign, I haven't got one unsolicited mail since I put up mine about 2 months ago. I guess that won't apply to election literature if my address is on it....

Just got a reply from Alan:
    Dear Eddie,

Thank you for taking the time to email me and for going to the trouble to document this matter.

Needless to say that I am disappointed that my newsletter has been distributed in this fashion. My distribution company with whom I have a long association have assured me that this will not happen again.

If I can be of assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

    Yours sincerely,

    Alan Farrell TD

Who pays for the cost of distribution and the booklet? The FG party?

    Probably the tax-payer.

Yes the postmen do have a set basic wage.

Publicity Post is an extra payment for the postman of 3c per item. The more houses the postperson has the more they earn. I know some of the younger lads who have quite a low basic wage save it up and use it to pay their car insurance or tax. It adds up at the end of the year if you have over 500 houses on your route.

All election mail is addressed and therefore must be delivered as a fully paid postal item. If you have your sign up you should not get any publicity post. However these items are now put into a sorting frame where each house a slot and can sometimes get mixed with ordinary mail if you have a few pieces on the day.

    Yeah its the tax payer.

I believe it works along the lines of that once you exceed a certail tally and adhere to certain criteria you recieve payments from council or commission

The reason why I & my neighbours elected to put up the signs wasn't because of a problem with the postal service.

The publicity mailing companies are meant to have an "opt out" service where you register your address and they commit not to fill your letterbox anymore. In my experience the opt out service doesn't work and not all publicity mailing companies subscribe to it. This has resulted in more than 20 items being received into the house in the space of a week, regularly.

The other issue I've been having is the "charity" sticker collections. The stickers are normally posted between 5-7am in the morning and have been accompanied by people trying the handle on the front door. The no junk mail sign has virtually eliminated this. When you have light sleepers it's a big relief.

Thankfully I have a great, reliable and friendly postman who knows that I have no problems with items I get in the door from him so I still get commercial items sent via the An Post system.

The big problem here is most of them are non national with poor English,(when it suits) and they will say they cant read the signs.
A few things you can do here
    1) Report them to the litter warden if any left on the ground or dangling from your postbox
    2) Call the Gardái. When you have a bundle of items stuck in you postbox as I regularly see it usually tells you no body is home and this is a security issue. An Post adhere to a strict code of practise when it comes to how mail items are delivered.

Report these people to the Gardái also. There is no reason for them to try your door handle. I would say in a lot of cases the postman will call a neighbour or the Gardai if they see anything strange on their deliveries

Most if not all of the Postmen I work with are good at their jobs and do a good job every day. Mistakes are made ok but I am happy to say the lads I work with are fairly decent.
