Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi Steo,

I'm booked to have this op in a few weeks. I can only tell you how I got the op booked. I went to my optician and asked him about it, he reffered me to an eye surgeon, each app with the eye surgeon is about €160 but the operation is covered in my health insurance.

    Hi all,

I'd be really interested to know if any of you have gone ahead with surgery for this particular problem. I'm sure everyone's issues and experiences are different but personally I've been to two of the most prominent surgeons in the country and they wouldn't even really entertain the idea of surgery, they felt the risk of over correction was far too great.

Going by the few posts on this page you'd be lead to believe that it's a fairly straghtforward thing. As such I'd be really interested to hear how anyone got on with their surgery and what kind of results were achieved.

    Rgds,

I had the surgery in October and very happy with the results. The xmas photos have me perfectly alligned :)
As for the whole process, once I was referred to a surgeon it was all very straighforward and quick. He was positive of the prospects post surgery and never tried to put me off or suggest I think about it. Simply told me the details, outlined the procedure and what entailed along with the recovery period and left it up to me to contact his secretary to confirm I wanted to proceed.
Recovery was a chore more than anything. Couple of weeks off and then another few where my eyes tired quicker than usual but full sorted now.
I've pm'ed you my surgeon's name. Best of luck.

hey im sixteen and i think i have strabismus,my eye turns in but snaps back straight again its not very noticeable but i want it fixed either way as it effcts my confidence any help on surgeries or something please help :)

    Hey all,

I had the surgery 2 weeks ago and it went well. I had both eyes operated on. The hospital staff where so caring and reassuring. The only con is that the recovery period does take a few weeks, my right eye is still quite sore and stitches have not dissolved yet. So if you do plan to get it done put a 4 week recovery plan into place to make life easier ( I have a toddler but also a very supportive family)

I'm happy I did it, I was so self conscious and my eyes are straight now so I'm delighted :D

hi i read your post , i was wondering who did your surgery and were you waiting long for it, thank you.

I had the surgery done eighteen years ago in the Mater, and a very good job it was too. I'm just wondering if the risks of double vision etc. still apply if you've had the surgery done before. I'm not sure if I will have to have it done but I am starting to notice a tendency towards squinting in photos and when I'm tired.

Folks should do some research on eso/exotropia and eso/exophoria before thinking they need surgery.

efb, I see you wore glasses before the surgery.

Did they fix your sight, too? or was it just the strabismus?

My exotropia seems to be getting worse in last 6 months or so and I've been looking at laser eye surgery to correct my vision recently so wondering would it be possible to sort both problems in the one go etc...

  • Registered Users Posts: 75 ✭✭Medceltic

I went to public hospital the ophthalmologist let me go, without be seen by the consultant.
    - Pretext, I have Sarcoidosis and All result were clear about it. I have no signe of it according to the consultant (affect the eye)
He said that; I cannot have surgery to fix my strabismus.
    - I will still have double vision
    - l might get back my eye as it used to be lazy and l loose my eye control, as in photography portrait, when l look to the lens l will correct my exotropia.
In may I have an appointment with a private consultant in Galway.
I really need to get rid of this strabismus than l work out about my short sight I know l have to forget about the sight of the lazy eye. they said Laser won't correct it.
    Let see with private !!
    I have strabismus since l was 26 now l am 41.
    I scary Irish women, lol

Hi can anyone tell me if lazy eye surgery is covered by health insurance ?
    Thanks

Yes Private insurance. HSE will interfere only in bleeding or urgent procedures.
It cost €3500 in Private hospital like Galway clinic.
I have it and I will Not do it, according to the Surgeon it will be lazy again.
    In my case.

    Bon courage

The HSE will provide strabismus surgery for public patients. The waiting list can be several years.

It must be very very critical situation.
double vision or cosmetic isn't on their list.
    Private accept it.

Thank you I will ring around the health insurance as it sounds cheaper than to pay yourself . I had this operation when I was around 7 ...it worked for years I am 35 now and it is only the last 5 years in has been noticeable so I will go ahead with this op again .

That is not correct. What sort of critical situation are you talking about? Strabismus surgery is available to both children and adults in the public system for many reasons, including what some would consider cosmetic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 75 ✭✭Medceltic

I went to Public hospital using my GP letter and appointment, the Consultant did not even see me. only the Ophthalmologist and the nurse who saw me.
They said, It s cosmetic reason despite I have the double vision.
I will have difficulties in the future.

Private took of me 800 euro, I got Silicone procedure just to see how it works.
even the silicone was not enough to bring the lazy eye to it original place.

the rest I had to pay 3000 euro to get the Procedure of my eye.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say an ophthalmologist saw you but a consultant did not. Ophthalmologists are consultants. Do you mean you saw a medical ophthalmologist but not a strabismus surgeon?

    Which hospital was this?

What silicone procedure? A band or an injection?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭boardsuser1

Had this procedure done in 2012, had a lazy eye for over 25 years at that point.

In one sense it didn't bother me too much bar photos until people connected to a former girlfriend kept calling me 'squinty' it bloody annoyed me so much i got it done.

Lets just say that once it was done and they mocked me i looks them in the eye and had the last laugh.

I was kept in overnight and the procedure took roughly 30 minutes and i was asleep for it.

1 or 2 days of double vision/vision problems and it was ok.

Had an appointment in my local hospital in February, got the all clear.

A lot of what you are saying is confusing or incorrect. All consultants are specialist doctors. In ophthalmology there are 2 types of specialists - consultant ophthalmic surgeons and consultant medical ophthalmologists. So your issue seems to be that you were seen by a medical ophthalmologist instead of a surgeon, but they are both consultants. Not everyone needs to be seen by a consultant - if we did that the whole system would grind to a halt. Regardless, medical ophthalmologists can assess strabismus.

You are now talking about botox instead of silicone, which was it? They are 2 very different things. And botox is used in adults as well as children.

I understand that you had a particular experience, but you are not explaining it clearly, and that may be misleading.

People will be reading this thread trying to figure out if they can get strabismus surgery in the public system.

Strabismus surgery is available for public patients in public hospitals, including for adults, and there is no need to go privately unless they want a shorter wait.
