UCAS and combining points.

Okay so I got like 200 and something UCAS points, 340 in the leaving. I heard somewhere that if you repeat applying to UCAS you can combine your last leaving cert results with your new ones so you don't have to repeat 7-8 subjects for points.

Like, if I got a D in geography this year and got a B in it next year and only repeated geography then they remove the 40-50 points and replace it with 70-80 or whatever it is so I can get more points in combination.

Is this true? I don't want to repeat all the subjects and I'm going to go in as an external candidate while I'm in college so I can bag some more points and get the course I wanted to do originally in England, a course that's not even available in Ireland.

UCAS doesn't work off points afaik, you're given a conditional offer (which is like grades you must achieve) based on what the college thinks of your personal statement/reference and perhaps an interview.

Most colleges show the UCAS tariff points needed to do the course and all but one of the ones I plan applying to don't ask for grades.

I've applied to UCAS twice now and I have only seen a handful of colleges asking for tariff, it's usually the lower ranked ones, most places ask for specific grades. Anyways about your question, as far as I know you can't combine your tariff points but they will take your previous results into consideration when you apply.

It was actually here on this website where I originally read it, I can't find it again though.

Take into consideration? What do you mean by that? Wouldn't that qualify as combining points?

Look at requirements for each one:

Solus01 is right Biscuits., in reality the tariff point system isn't used by the majority of colleges, as its relatively easy to get points, (eg. I'd get extra points for having done well in high level piano exams).
To the representatives I've talked to (for Cardiff, Edinburgh and Glasgow) grades have a much higher importance than tariff points.
Tariff points usually give a general figure for what the universities average or minimum requirements for a particular course are, though they don't have a large influence on most people's acceptance to the course.

Hey everyone. :) Just a quick question...

If you're repeating do they count any of your grades from the first sitting?

Say if you needed a B in English, and you got it the first time you sat the Leaving, and then on repeating you either dropped English, or you got a C or less. Would they allow you to count the B you got the first time?

No, I think that would be really unlikely, like picking and choosing grades. But I have heard you can keep your score from last time and just not repeat English (which is my question). As soon as that's answered with certainty (before I make a fool of myself by ringing up about it) then you can see if you can just count the B the first time and not have to repeat it at all.

Okay, I just linked every single course I'm applying to you, each one had points listed. OBVIOUSLY this applies to me, unless there's another way I, who did the LEAVING CERT not the A LEVELS, can see how my GRADES translate. More importantly, I want to see if I can combine points, that's the bloody well question!

Can we please stay on track? (if we've even started on a track in the first place).

I recommend you email the university you're interested in. It's not always clear what the standard requirement is. They'll tell you exactly what you will need. An ask them any questions you're unsure about.

They usually only care about the honours subjects and only count 5 subjects. I emailed mine as I wasn't sure and they're only counting my 4 honours subjects and need B1 and then a C3 in maths ordinary They don't really go by the points they just want you to meet specific grades. I'm repeating again myself.

We've already told you the answer! Every uni is different, some want specific grades others want tariff. Some will take into account your previous results, some won't.
