How to improve grass quality

I have an overgrown area down the back of my garden,it has a lot of dock leaves and nettles, as it is a rented house i cant dig it up and re sow it is there anyway of improving the grass quality without re sowing it?

Cut it now, in the spring when it starts to grow again spray it with MCPA. That spray will kill the weeds not the grass. Remember that the spray will work best when weeds are at the early stage of growth, so you might have to cut again in spring and let it regrow for a while before you spray it.
