Help with VGA signal to TV from laptop

I have connected my laptop to the TV via VGA to VGA but the TV is saying no signal. Do I have to change some setting on my laptop to send the signal via the VGA. I want to watch a DVD, from the laptop. Any idea's why I need to do? Thanks

Try looking for a key combination Fn+F?? (F8 on my Dell) to toggle the display between laptop screen and VGA port.

Thanks for that. It is F8. I was thinking it was probably something simple enough but didn't have a clue either way.
