Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Probably one of my favourite photos from the student protest last Wednesday. The atmosphere was buzzing. When the USI folk spoke, it wasn't that dissimilar to a concert.

To explain what this is -

I used an infra-red filter for this one because I wanted to show the heat coming from the ground here. This is Rotorua in New Zealand, an area of extremely high geothermal activity. You can see the bright orange area in the foreground where a thermal is bubbling up through the ground and making the mud boil at the edge of the lake.

regardless of what an infrared filter shows, i didn't think any sensor or film is sensitive to infrared in the range where it'd pick up heat.
also, it would imply that the water in the centre of the pic is a lot warmer than the water on the left.

I was at the Milk Market in Limerick on Friday, some great photos by
John Hickey on display. I'm always interested in seeing other photographers photos but feel bad as I'm not going to buy any but the seller might think I'm interested & possible going to buy....

Infra-red radiation is quite visible in the shorter wavelengths, both to us and to digital sensors - that's how we can see that a metal is "red" hot. The really long wavelengths that we feel as heat are quite invisible but objects that emit them also emit the shorter, visible ones so that objects that emit more of the shorter ones are probably also emitting more of the longer ones. The water in this photo isn't emitting a lot of IR light, it's reflecting the light from the sun which is emitting a lot of both visible and invisible IR light.

Digital sensors are sensitive to this shorter wavelength IR radiation just as much (if not more) than we are but the cameras have their own IR filters to block it out - it just doesn't work perfectly so we can block all but IR light with a filter and use a long exposure to get enough light to form an image.
