I see the Dublin local authorities aer open all (lost) of their data freely to developers to develop what they wish...

How do you view this ? Good or bad?

I'm a Phd student, working on vehicle emissions, so need access to lots of different things like traffic speed/vehicle counters etc etc, and Ireland is soo far behind the likes of the UK etc in terms of having databases easy to access. So I'd be in full support of projects as such!

    Second that.

I'm working on one such project (nothing like data.fingal.ie and nothing to do with vehicles - not at liberty to say what it is here). The data that will be made accessible to developers is already in the public domain, be it on many websites or hidden in various reports already written. All we will be doing is providing an interface to make it easier for your website or app to hook into it. Ireland is behind the UK in what is currently available, but I don't see us in much of a worse state than a lot of other EU countries. Services like this are surprisingly difficult to find in other jurisdictions. What currently exists here, is done very well I think. As it happens, the service we will be providing will be a free... in the UK equivalent you need to pay a small fee for it. All this stuff is very important for the whole eGovt competitiveness thing. Openness is a big selling point.

Also, as I am discovering, these things take a surprising amount of time to get right.

This was announced by Fingal a year ago and now the other Dublin councils are joining in pending funding and there is a department in NUI Maynooth working on progressing the open data initiative.

Most of the datasets are not pertinent in a real world situation in an app context as the data is not current or doesn't get updated frequently enough but they are looking for pointers from developers as to what data they have that they could provide and be of use.

I was able to put an app together using the geo-reference of disabled parking bays and version 2 is now up on the app store and the android market

Was that via the Open Data project? I thought only Fingal had released their datasets as yet?

The open data initiative was only being discussed by the others at the time so, I approached the relevant sections directly and told them what I was doing, and they duly helped out in whatever way they could in terms of the data and format

Just tried the iOS version in Dublin City Centre....no parking spacs appear on the map? Is it just a map of points or is it location aware?

No its not guided on GPS, so it wont be used while driving. If you zoom into your particular area of Dublin the spaces come up.

I have no data from dcc on spaces in the center outside Dublin 1 and 2

How is your son getting on? Has he submitted yet? Do you know if there's much interest in it?

I can't seem to find the app ideas that have been submitted, there may have been none?

I forgot all about programming over xmas, I was going to do a small app for this but not sure if I can still register?

Also is anyone aware of open data sets for the entire country? Dublin only is a bit limiting.

Its open till noon next Monday. If your doing an iPhone app, it only needs to be submitted and pending review.

There were a good number of developers at the open day at the start of December so I'd expect there would be a good few apps to come out of it. They haven't posted any of the entries on the site yet tho

Nah Android app, I haven't been able to get the money together for a mac for iPhone programming. :(

Might see about putting it together in a week although its a terrible short time to code, test and review an app and still work :D

    Hiya,
I am no expert but have an iPhone. My son is doing the new course in Coolock. It only started last Oct (two years) and lots of basic theory and computer science stuff is mostly what hes done. He had an assignment and didnt get near this competition, I was egging him on to enter it and find someone with more experience to show him the ropes. Moreso getting experience than hoping to win...

AFAIK you have until the 9th at mid day and you just need to e-mail in your idea. The ideas they got so far are posted up there.

Have you got a link to where the ideas are posted? I can't find them on the website! Be interesting to see if someone submitted what I had in mind! :D

    Hi,

Apologies for not posting before now, but I only just came across this thread.

There are two types of entries for the Apps4Fingal competition - Apps and Ideas.

For an Ideas entry you simply need to submit an Idea for an App that uses Open Data - there is a €500 prize for the Ideas category. To enter use the Ideas Entry Form on the right-hand side of the http://data.fingal.ie/apps4fingal page. Entries to this category are published as received and can be found at http://data.fingal.ie/apps4fingal/ideas - the intention here is to enable non-developers to participate and also provide ideas that developers might then turn into Apps

For an App entry you must have a functional app created by the closing date of next Monday 9th January at noon. To enter use the Apps Entry Form on the right-hand side of the http://data.fingal.ie/apps4fingal page. Entries to this category will be published after the closing date has passed. There is a total of €10,500 in prizes for App entries with a possibility of a single entry winning up to €5,000 if it were to win a Thematic Category and the Overall prize.

Best of luck to anyone entering.

    Regards,

    Dominic.

    Assistant Head of Information Technology,

Thanks for that post, I'd have loved to have entered, even have my app design and functionality drawn up and will probably go ahead and make it anyway but time just caught up on me.

Good luck to all that did enter and it would be great to see this happen more often and for FingalOpenData to post some feedback here too on how it went.

    Just came across this site today;
    http://decisionmap.ie/
DecisionMap uses trusted, publicly available data sources in conjunction with interactive maps and visualisations to create a unique online resource for everyone. We want you to use DecisionMap to literally see the important statistical data you need about Ireland.

Use DecisionMap to aid decision making and planning. Use it to find customers. Use it to plan resources. We believe that decisions based on data are better decisions.

We're launching in Beta because we believe that's how things should be done. DecisionMap currently uses data from the 2002 and 2006 census. We want you to use it now so we can further enhance the service prior to the publication of the 2011 Census results next year.
