Has anybody any experience of publishing essays as part of academic journals?

Are you allowed publish essays that have been submitted as part of coursework, or does it have to be independent of grades you have received?

    Also, any idea of length!

    Thanks! :)

It depends on the field, but it's rare for solo-author undergraduate paper to get published in mine. That said, the organizations in my field run student paper competitions all the time. Winners get published and there's usually some cash prize too, or funding to present it at a conference etc.
In terms of length, every journal is different, check their guides for authors.
These competitions are usually announced in journals, and if your lecturer is keeping up with current research they'll know if anything is coming up soon. or you could try the homepage of major journals in your field, or even any of the major organizations.

    Best of luck!
