    Our local Chinese supermarket; Loon Fung, is a joy. Always something new to try. Cuttlefish is my fave of late, softer texture to squid or octopuss. Deep fried, esp.

    Low-grade chicken wrapped in a fistful of greasy batter. No idea why people buy them- they taste disgusting.

    The Imperial restaurant just up from Tower Records in Dublin used to do a proper Chinese menu if you wanted it (sea urchin, dumplings etc.), not sure if they still do.

    From an animal welfare point of view im against any form of balls in chinese restaurants..i mean for gods sake...castrating chickens for a dish isnt on.
    as for the poor prawns,sure they only have small balls so i can only imagine
    how many of them it takes to make on prawn ball...dont even get me started on the chicken lips and feet:-p

    The chips in the Chinese thing actually gets on my t(ts a bit. I mean HONESTLY - could you not even TRY the rice? Do you think something bad will happen if you do? I go into the Chinese up in Donegal when I'm visiting my Gran and about half the people coming in there are looking for chicken curry and chips. It must drive them nuts - they have a ton of delicious things on the menu and they spend their days making chicken curry and chips. Just show how unadventurous we still are as a race.

    Also, everyone in their right mind should know that only the Italians make good chips.

    Actually, if you want to eat "healthy" yet you are dying for an takeaway, chicken balls are great to get as you can remove the batter and eat the chicken, which won't retain any of the fat or oil of the batter. Then add whatever sauce or rice to what you're having.

    I used to like chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce, but I've gone off it now for a long time. The dish I always get is called "Hu Yu Gai Po" - for real.

    What's the deal with these MSGs then?

    think you're missing the point. how do you know they were thinking "wee! diet drink magically makes the whole meal healthy". you assuming that's what they thought is stupider than that assumption would be. maybe some folks wanted to save themselves a few hundred calories, or like me are diabetic, and can eat big burgers but not drink a ****load of sugar without feeling ill. I drink black coffee with my full irish, but I don't think it makes the breakfast healthy

    I think it's fear.
    I mean, you're starving, you decide you're going to treat yourself by breaking open your piggy bank and splashing out on a takeaway.
    You go to the counter and order your food, deciding to be all adventurous and try something on the menu that catches your eye, instead of the usual.
    You get it home, settle your ass in front of the tv, beer in one hand, fodder in the other. The excitement mounts. In an hour you will be so full, you won't be able to move.
    Anticipation builds, you take off the lid, pile the noodles onto the plate and smother it in whatever you ordered, you take a big forkful, raise it to your mouth and........Oh jesus! What the fcuk is that taste? it's disgusting!! And are those....oh god, they are, they're PRAWNS....mother fcuking prawns. I hate prawns. When the fcuk did "special" become a mixture of fish and meat???...what is wrong with those people?...It's ok, I'll salvage the noodles..oh the sauce, it's vile and it's everywhere...dinner tonight will be toast with a side of prawn crackers. Misery. :(

    There's nowhere near me that does dumplings! I would love to find a place that serves them.


    But in relation the original topic: food = good. You like what you like, what we know as a chinese curry tastes pretty fine to me :)

    Does it say something about our reluctance to experiment with food, or can you convince me that Chinese curry, chickenballs and chips is the food of the gods?

    No but chipper food is the food of the gods and when the chipper is closed this is the closest thing to chipper food in the Chinese! I will have them with sweet n' sour sauce too but that's it, the rest of Chinese food is mank imo!

    Years ago we used to order a Chinese curry religiously every Friday, it got so clockwork that I didn't need to describe the order to the guy on the phone or even call out numbers. It got to a stage where he'd recognise the number and even quote me on my order in my own semi-mnemonic way:

    2 DBOCC with C's and a HP of CB's = 2 Diced Breast of Chicken Curries with Chips and a Half Portion of Chicken Balls

    I've run into my fair share of Chinese take away snobs in my time, I have to say. Before during and after that time above I've tried varied meals from Chinese/Indian take aways but always find the above to be the most preferred after a feed of drink.

    Why do people get annoyed that the most popular dish from a Chinese take away is a curry? I've also tried home-made curries and they don't taste anything like the real deal. You'd swear you were commiting a crime by ordering one according to Chinese take away snobs. They take such offence god bless them! :D

    I would usually prefer a nice Jalfrezi, Massala, Rogan Josh, Bhuna, or some Bombay Aloo, but if I was ordering Chinese I like Roast duck in szechaun sauce, Fillet of beef in black pepper sauce, honey glazed bbq ribs, chicken &cheese spring rolls, chicken and sweetcorn soup, or just a simple sweet and sour chicken hong kong style.
    In a sit down Chinese restaurant I had a lovely chicken dish before that had ginger, chilli and a load of other things in it.

    I've noticed a lot of Chinese takeaways now have a "european menu" too. Burgers, Taco chips, chicken fillets etc.
    I've never ordered a burger from a chinese and don't think I ever would. For some reason I imagine them to be really scrawny crap burgers and twig like dry chips. If I want burger and chips I prefer to order a proper homemade style minced beef burger, with chunky chopped spud chips from somewhere that I know specialises in them. Although I do enjoy some of the chain store burger takeaways too!

    Although that being said, I am tempted to try an omlette from a chinese. I imagine them as being massive with lots of flavour and lovely chunky veg. I think what puts me off is that they are so easy to just make yourself, or because I'm usually more in the mood for something else.

    It's only really in the last 2 years that I've tried a few different chinese dishes. I used to just only order sweet & sour chicken. I was never a huge fan of chinese food, I prefer italian, or indian, but I have developed a liking of some chinese dishes and get one about once every 3 months or so.

    totally of the point, but diet coke tastes way nicer. Thats why I buy it!! haha.

    I often go to my local chinese just for chips, 1.50 and a big portion and lovely chips, its one of the most popular options in the chinese i go too.

    There is no such thing as an "authentic Chinese restaurant" on Parnell St anymore. They are all pretty much Western/Irish focused now. There are only a handful of proper Chinese restaurants around nowadays. Even that 'china-sichuan' place only sells a handful of authentic dishes.
