Amp and speakers on a budget

Hi, I'm looking to buy an amp and speakers but am under a tight enough budget. 300 euros is probably my realistic limit but I'd say I'm willing to spend about 400 :) The priority for the amp will be playing music although I will be running an xbox through it for playing games and watching films. I'm under the impression that getting an av amp will seriously compromise on stereo quality though. Is this correct? As I said though music is the priority so am happy to live without surround sound gaming and films if it means much better sounding music. I listen to a broad range of genres of music from classical to rock to electronic.

Anyway to end this long winded question what could you do for me at around this price point? If you could give me a couple of options at different prices and explain how much of a difference there would be between them I would really appreciate it. Cheers.

    Hi Bert.

    Cheers for the post.

If you are looking to use this system for the majority of listening of music, then I would stick to a stereo system as you are quite correct in what you say. Home cinema receivers do not perform as well as stereo, for stereo listening.

Here are a few options :

    Cambridge Topaz AM5
    Q Acoustic 2010

Total price including delivery and 6m of good speaker cable - 285 Euro

    Marantz PM5004
    Boston A23 speakers

Total price including delivery and 6m of good speaker cable - 385 Euro

I feel that this would be the best system for a good all-round system and those little Boston speakers sound fantastic.

Let me know what you think or if you would like other options.

    Thanks Dave.

How much of a difference would there between these two systems?

Also would it make much of a difference to spend the extra cash and get the MARANTZ PM6003 while I'm at it. Would make a mockery of my so called 300 euro budget but if it was to make a big difference I wouldn't mind going a bit over 400.

    Hi Bret.

Ther would be a big difference between the two systems with the Marantz being the more sought after. Sound wise the Marantz will sound more crisper and detailed over the Cambridge.

The PM6003 has now finished and the only one we have left is our display unit priced at £199.95 to clear (SILVER FINISH)
It has been replaced by the PM6004 priced at £309.05

We have also now sold out of the Boston A23 speakers :( at £119.95 they flew out the door!!

You could add the Boston A25 to the PM5004 in for a total of £379.95 / 447 Euro.

Or the Monitor Audio BX1 for a total of £359.90 / 423 Euro.

I hope this does not confuse things to much ;)

Let me know if any suit or if you have any further questions.

Is that PM6003 display unit still available? If it is could you hold onto that and the Boston A25 speakers for me and let me know what that will come to in euros delivered to Galway. I'll buy them today if they are. Cheers.
