Is this a street or a flats complex or....? Does it still stand ?

It's a 'street' of flats/apartments.



They'd remind you of New York brownstone style apartments, especially inside. All are one bed, but quite large (very high ceilings too), A friend of mine lives in one, it has a lovely exposed brick kitchen, a large living area with old fireplace and some apartments have a cellar for storage

They date from the 1800's, probably around 1880 or so... there are lots of blocks, originally artisan dwellings built by Guinness but have been privatised over the years.. There's a nice mix of people living there, in my friends block she has a couple of elderly people who are 3rd generation residents, an artist, an actor, some young couples and loads of owner occupiers..

if you're thinking of moving here, do yourself a favour and go for a viewing. The apartments are something else.

The whole estate of 'avenues' along Rialto Street and on to South Circular Road would appear to have been planned, I wonder if they were all done by by Guinesses. However, I suspect it was built in a number of phases from 1850-1900, although it is difficult to tell which is older or newer. Rialto Buildiongs are somewhat reminiscent of those at Bride Street (Also by Guinness / Iveagh Trust)

They are not all one bedroom, some are two bedroom,

I had a relative lived here in 1904 (a Guinness worker) hence the fascination.

They really are powerful solid looking buildings.

Would love to know more myself, I grew in no:29 until I was about 8 or 9. My grandfather was the head maintenance man for the Archen Dwellings (Think it was called) so most of my Dads brothers an sisters got a flat there when they got married, (Wink, Wink...Nod Nod...:) I presume)

I will never forget them, huge ceilings and equally huge sash windows, solid brick work, stone stairs, the iron hand rails. Jasus I would love to go back and see how they are now.

Your link seems to be down at the moment until the 17th of october, I will check back then.

Im not sure on what they where called, I will ask the ould man (when I get a chance) who exactly ran them, it always sounded like the Archen dewellings to me but maybe they mean't the Artisan not sure.

Yea grew up in Rialto buildings for a bit, but the parents where in another flat just after they married (Can't remember the number, will ask the ould man) Then my older sister was born and they moved to No: 29 and inbetween had me. I grew up there for for 7,8 maybe 9 years.

Sometime 1900-1914. the Dublin City Archives in Pearse Street Library may have a copy.
