Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I went to salmonella corner in my local Dunnes a few weeks ago and there was a packet of green steak for sale. It sort of turned me off the whole 'reduced to clear' meat thing.

Tesco's salmonella corner is better though, especially the bakery stuff in the evenings

You have to hit Tesco's at just the right time though. The stuff that's reduced is initially not a great deal - maybe 20-25% off. Then about 7 or 8 it gets seriously marked down for a second time - to maybe 10% of the original price.
The beef I have no problem with - decently aged meat is not bright red anyway - and the odd time you can spot fillet or that yummy Angus beef - well that's the only way I can afford it. The chicken I avoid - that stuff seems off even before 'best by' dates.

As for the bread - the tasty but expensive La Brea loaves are superb (olive oil and herb..mmmmm) when marked down to 10c or 20c!

The serious markdowns only happen in certain stores - Mahon Point does it a lot (though you have to be quick to outflank the Romanian women in the long skirts!). Some stores (Youghal for instance) never seem to have decent reductions.

Dunnes rarely marks stuff down to clearance price - when I worked there it really annoyed me to see the amount of meat and bread that was black-bagged and dumped every night - when I suggested that at least they should offer it for free to some organisation I was told it was policy not to - that they had been sued before for some reason. I do cruise by when I reckon they will be unloading their yummy Cuisine de France jam doughnuts at 50c or less for 6 - they freeze well and 10/20 seconds in the microwave has them just right!

For those with babies, they have tommee tipee drinking cups for €1.06, one for age 4m+ and one for 12m+. These are usually about €6. I bought 2 in phibsborough on Wednesday but seen them today in the tallaght store.

Yeah it's so bloody annoying, Dunnes just throw out everything, like a lot of places. Good old health and safety, a lot of places have been sued by people for food poisining etc. after being given it for free by charity organisations and homeless shelters and what not. Grrrr!

This is what I found in my local store. Some bargains to be gotten if no one else is around blocking up the place. :pac:

I know about the double the difference policy, but does anyone know about OTHER policy's.
As posted earlier, we are being watched so PM's might be the way to go.
Over heard staff member talking to another about yellow stickers and stock not on shelf's and if you knew about policy (something to do with quantity) could be adventageous.

Don't want to say too much but heard that a F'er does this all the time, I know a bit more but not saying for now.

    Share please through PM's.

The thing is that if you see something is obviously gone off, you don't have to buy it. I buy a lot of my meat in the reduced to clear section due to serious lack of funds and have never had any problems. You just need to use your discretion ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 55 ✭✭stirliz

I buy lots of my meat as reduced too, but I'm always checking the color of the meat. Mostly it's grand ;)

I'm interested of finding out more about tesco policies, but where can you find out more?

Anyway I love this thread!! :D

Dying to know the yellow sticker policy you're referring to... Thanks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 741 ✭✭✭Stripey Cat

If you find a product with a yellow sticker, take it to the checkout, and when they say do you have a clubcard, say: "I wouldn't join any clubcard that would have me as a member" in the style of Groucho Marx. They will then give you the product for free, and throw in some green meat and out of date Mint Crisp.

Keep this to yourself though. If everyone does it, there'll be chaos.

oh come on with this crap, there's no secret or yellow label policy. lets keep an eye on the real bargins, and IMO mint crisp bars aren't a bargain so move onto something new that people are actually interested in buying.

I think somebody doesn't like Mint Crisp...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

love them, but don't think its a bargain.

my idea of a bargain is something that will make my dinner cheaper or buy me a bigger tv, 10 cents off a bar of chocolate is hardly a bargain

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

Have 5 mint crisps for dinner and save 50c.

Those MintCrisps are normally €1.57, so they are 75% off at that price. That's more than 10c, it's eleven and a bit 10 cent pieces cheaper

So called Turkey trays €1.00 Tesco PLaoise. I say so called because they aren't that high. So really, they are baking trays with sloped sides... Handy for scones & cookies etc.

oh come on with this crap, there's no secret or yellow label policy. lets keep an eye on the real bargins, and IMO mint crisp bars aren't a bargain so move onto something new that people are actually interested in buying.

So something that's normally over €2 is now available for 66c, and that's not a bargain? Don't be silly.
Bargain alerts don't have to run in hundreds of euros. A bargain, in my eyes, is something that's a significnat percentage cheaper than it's normal retail price. In my eyes, a 10c Chomp bar selling for 1c is as big a bargain as a €10k telly selling for €1k. Wouldn't stop me buying the telly like, but I'd be living on Chomps for 6 months to pay for the thing.

And if you're looking for a cheaper dinner, every day your local supermarket throws out many many kilos of perfectly good food. I'm sure if you asked them, they'd give it to you instead of the bin.

Now, if someone could help me down off my soapbox.....

Now, to get off my soapbox.....

No, they wouldn't. I know it sounds crazy, all this perfectly ok food that's gone to waste. Should be given to charities. Except they can't, for 2 reasons:
    1. Insurance: if anything happened and the receiver got food poisoning, he /she could sue the supermarket
    2. Economy: if a supermarket starts to give out food, they potentially loose buyers who will only get the free stuff (as a buyer, I certainly would). People will wait for stuff to reach the sale by date and get it for free. Of course, not everyone would do that, but if you consider the amount of people now buying from the salmonella corner (I shop at certain times because I know the breads and vegs will be greatly reduced), it makes sense
