    Sorry to go off topic.

No bargains to be found in Tesco in Mahon:( Times are bad when the only bargains I get are Polish rasberry tea for 37c and some polish horseradish sauce for 34c. BOTH price checkers are not working so I couldn't scan a few things that I had seen reduced here. (didn't want to be taking a load of stuff to the checkout to be price checked) They did have big bags of smarties for 62c but no-one really likes smarties, do they? Even the children were :( when I produced the smarties from my shopping bags.

I rang them a few minutes ago and they told me they were sold out of them yesterday

Were there many today? And what time were you in at?

  • Registered Users Posts: 741 ✭✭✭Stripey Cat

    I like Smarties.

Getting smarties from a vending machine and wolfing them down was the only thing that got me through a very boring course I had to do a few years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

smarties aren't as good since they stopped putting delicious chemicals in them. and they changed the tubes to some cheap inferior cardboard.

I still like them though, good bargain alert!

Jen: OK. Moss, what did you have for breakfast this morning? Moss: Smarties cereal. Jen: Oh my God. I didn't even know Smarties made a cereal. Moss: They don't. It's just Smarties in a bowl with milk.

I telephoned looking for it in Drogheda - I first rang two other branches I rang didn't have it in stock, they suggested I try there. BOTH stores warned me that I could be waiting when I rang.
I did ring 4 times and eventually got through to someone, but as my query was electrical, she tried twice to transfer me to that department - there was no answer there either.
    Christ!

Finally found my first pack of AAA rechargeables - 81c :D
Only the one pack but proves they are still out there.

And now a few new BAs
Technika portable DVD player on shelf for 79, scans 34.99 (2 similar types but only the type with picture of a man NOT a boy on box.)

Various toys half price but perhaps of interest to the Thomas the T.E. collectors - Hank and Henry mini die cast models at €5 half price.

Do you mean they take the items off the shelves by management's order or do the staff buy these things before the customers can get their hands on them?

No bargain in Tesco Clare Hall yesterday. Although they now have a bragain shop that sells pretty good things. I bought some Sensodyne toothbrushes for 1.50 each and a few biscuits for less than 70 cents

Lol why would management want them took off the shelves they want rid of them that why the price is so low tesco still are making on it.

All stock is put on the shelf with a SEL this means anyone can buy it if you can't find any bargains your not looking hard enough. Send me a PM of what is it your looking for I might be able to help you out .

all I'm saying is that some of these "bargains" are clearly misprices, as opposed to "reduced to clear". Why then would they go down to ridiculously prices such as 9 cents, only to be back to full price a few days later? And I checked all items I bought, the use by date is far enough not to justify a clearance. I would understand if Tesco wanted to get rid of some lines, but usually the items keep selling as normal after the price has been corrected.
For eg, the Finest chocolate truffle balls at 1.12 were marked "2 for 6 euros", and 3 days later they were back to "4.42, 2 for 6 euros", so it was obviously a misprice.
Explains my comment: the management could have spotted these and asked the staff to remove the items off the shelves until prices are corrected

As for looking hard enough, I check most prices on the self service price checker, but no, most of the items are now back to normal in Clare Hall. Thanks for your offer anyway ;)

Clearance items that are reduced are not just reduced because a product is near its "Shelf Life" date, but more so beause a product is now out of production, cannot be sourced or is going to be superseded by a replacement product in the near future.

I don't think any of these price drops are mistakes as such, but maybe trying to push older products off the shelf.

Sure, but why are some like the Milka bars reduced then back to normal and will certainly be sold for years to come? Some items are clearly reduced because discontinued, but some still puzzle me

Better than mine, as long as you realise it's a lifetime battle. I can understand the urge to blow off every now and then but the more more times you give in to the urges, the harder it is to resist them next time.

Picked up one of these Sony ipod docking radio thingees at Drogheda over the weekend, and there were a few more left in the top shelf. They were 13.99, marked down from 59 something. They must have been having a laugh trying to sell it at 59! Just about worth 13.99 really.

Sure there are some mistakes, usually inputted offshore on the EPOS system wrongly.

Every week hundreds of new items are released, space has to made for them, sections are changed around, products are discontinued and others are launched.

Like everything there is a budget for this. Discontinued items are reduced to clear for a period of time, if 99% of distribution centers and stores cleared them by a certain date they return to full price and the budget is spent.

Once the item has an SEL on the shelf, it will not be removed once there is stock in the depo waiting to come in. When all the stock in the depo is in stores and the stock sells through, the SEL is removed.

    See packing shelves is simple!!

Then you have the crappy stores that don't launch products on time, their stockrooms look like a child's playroom and they just find ramdom stock and put it on sale, if its old enough it will be cheap enough.

To be honest, it looks nicer than it works.

I got one recently and the sound quality isn't great, it sounds like mono not stereo.

As another post said, it's just about worth the €13 but not the €59 it went for before.

That said, it's a nice present for someone who doesn't know what it actually cost.

few reductions in my local Tesco yesterday evening, lost my receipt so can't remember prices exactly but roughly:

    Neutrogena Handcream, normally 4.80 - now 2.34
Galaxy Caramel Sweets in box - half price - 1.79?
Maynards Wine Gums - Box - half price
Head and Shoulders Conditioner, down from 4.70? to 1.34 (large bottle)

If I find receipt I'll amend prices, they also had Terri's Chocolate eggs in different flavours (with Honeycomb and with Popping Candy) for 1.60 each.

Thought we were stocked for Christmas but I'm living with 3 boys so I'm going back this evening :-)
