Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Trekking in Kashmir

    Hi folks,

A friend and I have had a sudden urge to head off on an impromptu holiday and we're looking for some adventure. Kashmir was mentioned and having priced the flights for mid November it all seems very reasonable! The only thing I'm slightly apprehensive about is the weather. I've googled the crap out of it and it seems like as good a time as any to head over there though it might be a little cold.

Has anyone out there been to Kashmir and done any trekking there? Is it going to be too cold to enjoy for a relatively inexperienced trekker? I'd be extremely grateful for any advice and information people can give me!

There are a lot more things to be worried about than the weather!

Kidnapping and murder is a very real risk in Kashmir, getting caught up in skirmishes between the Indian and Pakistani armies is another.

You should really do some further research on the area, and perhaps think of trekking somewhere safer.

When I was in Delhi 20 years ago we headed to the Kashmir tourist office, while we were outside a local came up and warned us off heading there, we took his advice, a few weeks later we heard of a Norwegian guy who was there the time we would have gone who had been kidnapped and beheaded. I know that was a long time ago but this type of stuff still happens.

Thanks schemingbohemia! That's sound advice and something I'll definitely look into more. I thought things had calmed down significantly and it seems I was wrong. Thought I had googled the government warnings before posting. I certainly don't want to take any silly risks.

Can you suggest a safer place for trekking in the Himalayas?

Thanks for the forum link ppk!

Nepal, that's where we ended up going. Much more relaxed than Northern India. We hiked up from Pokhara, beautiful scenery, great people and the trekking was easy enough (though that was 20 years ago, in my current condition i wouldn't be able for it but I'm sure you would).

Excellent! I'll check it out. I was in Northern India a few years ago up around Shimla and got chatting to a guide there who recommended a few treks in the area. I might look into this a bit more too. At the time we got driven to Shimla, but would have loved to have gone by train after seeing it in Michael Palin's Himalayan adventure and it looked awesome.

    Thanks again!
