    +1 on this.

Make sure you read up and decide what to go for, cold water, tropical, salt water. Types and number of fish. Water chemistry especially, it's the entire basis of a healthy tank.

and whilst you're thinking about what exactly you want, make sure you prepare yourself for waiting a good length of time AFTER you get the aquarium BEFORE you can actually put fish in it.

read up on how to properly cycle a new aquarium and get used to the idea that it could be anything from a week to a month between putting water in it and stocking it with your desired fish.

as for on experienced fish keeper i would strongly reccomend that you start with a tropical tank and keep few easy going types of fish.
Nothing bad if you start with few guppy's for example.

the same apply to plants - no problem to spend a lot of money on them, but if you don't know what exactly you are doing you will loose most of them in few weeks.

Avoid shops, where seller will tell you that it is ok to put large fish in a small tank, or if they tell you that cycle takes 2 days as you can add chemicals.

and yes... don't use chemicals if you really don't need them.

How large is your aquarium going to be ?

what with water filtration? did you think about external filters?
