Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is there need for the physical cattle herd register if you are registered online.
The Vet in the Local DVO says yes but he is not sure. Personally I think no as it is duplication, think i read in the Farmers Journal that its not need.
Thanks in advance for the time and effort for a response.

The only need to retain the register book is to keep a record of your animal remedies usage.I think you can also create a file and save it on the computer and print off for Dept and Bord Bia inspections.

It is possible that you are registered online with agfood.ie and can apply for SFP and register your calves online, but you may not have chosen the option of herdbook online and you may still be required to keep the blue book. I posted this in farming Chit chat last week. You should check to be sure. Figures from the Dep earlier this year showed that only just over 5000 farmers had chosen to keep their herdbook online. Many might believe that they are doing it , but they may not have selected the option.
You must first logon to agfood.ie and complete an electronic application form. You must agree to the Terms and Conditions to use the Animal Identification and Movement (AIM) facilities on agfood.ie as your on-farm bovine electronic herd register. This can be done by selecting a new option that will be available under AIM in July 2010 called “Bovine Electronic Herd Register”. When using this for the first time you must record agreement to the Terms and Conditions for its use. It is a condition of registration that keepers must use AIM to register calves electronically and to notify movement of animals from farm to farm. Keepers will have responsibility for ensuring that all notifications are up to date and that the herd profile is accurate and complete. When you log on to AIM, the system will confirm that you are signed up for the Bovine Electronic Herd Register and from that date you can stop using the on-farm herd register (blue book).

You have to record ALL movements both onto and off your holding including deaths in the register. You can probably get one from your local Dept of Agriculture office if your not doing it online

You do need a herd register (blue book).
This book is also used to record animal remedies records.
You can register for online services, tick the box, and you will not need to keep the herd register, however you will still need to keep the animal remedies records.

Thanks for your reply. Do ya think the only place i can get 1 is in the dept office , i would be afraid to ring up lookin for it and next thing there thinkin this fella not keepin record of movements or anything and is a bit of a messer and they decide to give me a inspection. When i started farming 3 years ago i got a herd number i am suprised i never got a book. I am in reps and my planner does most of the stuff online, would there be any chance he has it ?

Very unlikely that your planner has it - the DVO should have sent you one when you were issued with your herd number. They're required to post them by Registered Post and usually send the letter confirming your number with the Herd Register and some leaflets and other things.

I wouldn't worry about the Dept. getting suspicious - they'll probably want you to request the new register in writing but if you come up with some reason like the one redzerologhlen just gave, they'll just issue it - they honestly don't care why they're issuing it. (The old one being stolen at a mart is always a good excuse too)

And it really shouldn't come back to haunt you sometime in the future - I know for a fact that in one office, the people carrying out inspections never look for any records like that to check up on your story. I can't imagine that the other offices are operating any differently.

The online system would be ideal for you, no need to do anything only sign up for it since you dont have births. Also if selling direct off farm you can download the permits.
However if you have to have a book, then since you have lost/burned/misplaced the old one (which was obviously bang uptodate) the local office will be happy to issue a new one on receiving a written request
