Do the exact same myself. Doubt I'll get near using a full tank tbh but the added freedom to explore the island is a definite plus.

    Booked the C3 for €106

Just heads up on this (bargain alert of the year for me!). It was supposed to end tonight but it looks as though they've extended it for another few days... After the weather we've just had in Dublin I think I'll need a little sun in January. And beer.

Is anyone else not too bothered about all this awful weather because it's gonna make the weather in Tenerife seem all the better!

I've sent 3 email enquiries re dates since Friday night and haven't gotten any answer yet. I cant book flights until the dates are confirmed. There's a 7 day refund period so if I don't hear by tomorrow I think I'll ask for my money back because the lack of reply makes me nervous.

Vibe666, thnx for the informative narrations. I'm having different thoughts on when to book. First week of June, or during Easter week (first 2 weeks of April) or 2nd week of Feb as they all coincide with school holidays. . How is the weather at these times? I would be grateful if you could comment on the weather at these times and especially the sea temp. I also noticed that Ryanair flies on Thurs and Sat after April and was thinking of flying Thurs, book a place for the night and fly back on Thurs or Sat (which means I'll have to book a place for a Friday night if I'm flight out on Sat). I presume also that getting accommodation elsewhere is not a problem for a night. Pls shed some light on this. thx

the weather is good pretty much all the time. it does get cloudy and it does even rain sometimes, but on the whole the weather is good all year round, particularly on the west coast of the island and especially around the peurto santiago & los gigantes areas due to the shelter of the volcano.

usually, in the event that it's cloudy in the morning, it will have cleared up by the afternoon most days and even when it is cloudy it's still plenty warm enough and you can still get just as much of a suntan as when it's sunny as the clouds don't block much in the way of UV rays. we used to see loads of people getting sunburnt when it was cloudy as they didn't think they'd need to use any SPF lotion.

as far as accommodation goes, there's plenty of hotels you could book for one night, but i can't say what the prices would be for a single night. you could ask at the place in we're all staying if they do a single night rate too to save moving from somewhere else?

either way you'd be well advised to book well in advance to be on the safe side as it can get very busy around school holidays and its a popular spot with the spanish and other europeans too, so don't count on it only being busy during UK/IRL holiday times.

the sea temps normally wouldn't get below (conservatively) about 18-20 degrees, even in the winter. i did a lot of scuba diving over there, all the way from the PADI open water to doing the 6 week Divemaster internship where i was doing 2-3 dives a day and i only ever wore the bottom half of a 2 piece 7mm wetsuit (i.e. like a pair of dungarees) even in the winter, although i have to say that by the 3rd dive of the day i was usually fairly chilly. :)

for anyone that is going, thus was filmed today on the beach in los gigantes, just 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel we will be staying a. :D

    http://bit.ly/t243DF

don't worry, it normally only happens once or twice a year, if that. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

damn it. Why only once or twice a year? Looks like a decent surf wave!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

there was a really bad swell one year i was there and the waves were repeatedly breaking over the top of the marina wall, so it was all cordoned off and you couldn't go round the marina at all.

during the storm, a huge wave came over the top that was so big that it sank a bunch of the boats that were moored there.

there's a whale and dolphin watching boat there that is an old dutch (afaik) sloop and despite being the oldest boat in the marina and taking the most direct hit from the incoming wave, it didn't actually sink. the wave hit it and rolled it over right onto it's side so that the mast went all the way into the water, but then it popped back up again.

afaik, there were 3 or 4 other decent sized boats that were moored along that wall that were either sitting right on the bottom of the marina floor or very low in the water with significant damage.

to give you an idea of the size of the waves coming over, here's a picture of the katrin (circled in red) sitting at her usual mooring where she was when that storm came.

    katrin.jpg

it was pretty epic to say the least. there's a bar in the marina that has framed pictures of the waves coming over the top of the wall behind the boats, but i can't remember if anyone ever got pics of it actually being hit or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Cool, I know which Captain to talk to about whale watching so!

I don't think age would have anything to do with a vessels capacity to withstand such a hit though - surely it's all just down to the largest keel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

there were much newer and bigger boats there that took a much harder pounding than katrin. i'm pretty sure one of them was scrapped in the end due to the cost of repairs, but there were others that were raised and repaired and may well still be running.

    Really don't care Vibe.
As long as its decent and cheapish. We'll be renting the 100eur car so can travel. Prefer in the city but quiet & maybe a walk away 4m shops and sea.
Excuse my lack of knowledge lol

Booked this for early Feb but flights have now gone up to €480 for two! Ryanair are currently selling seats for travel in December and Jan so hoping that I can pick up something in next months seat sale otherwise I'm gonna have to look at alternatives. Does anyone know of any cheap flights from UK?

Bump - anyone recommend a decent place to stay for a past-grad student couple Dec 17-23.
Close-ish to beach, cheap and cheerful. Hostels even.

    Any comments guys?
Personally i love doing things on hols so id love to go diving.
Are there any options in Los Christianos, or would it be better to get up to Los Gigantes?

I've no real preference either way... We're getting that apartment for 170pounds for the week...

Just a quick ‘heads up’ to any boardsies who bought this deal, that you have to book it before this Sunday (I think!?). Also, I was just wondering if anyone had any info on flights… i.e., when I bought the deal I checked flight availability for two periods. The first was in January/February and the other time was nearer Summer (late May/June). Friday flights with Ryanair are still available in January but not later in the year. Aer Lingus don’t seem to do Fridays at all, and only Tuesdays and Saturdays in May?!
I’m sure when I checked before there was loads of availability on Fridays (which is when the deal has to be used, Friday to Friday) all throughout the year, but maybe I’m losing my marbles.

Can anyone shed any light? Have the airlines pulled a lot of flights on Fridays?

So, got back this morning, 5 degrees in Dublin Airport was a shock to the system after the low to mid twenties of the last week!

El Marques Palace is lovely, nice pool and clean, spacious apartments. Ours was brilliantly furnished (DVD player, iPod Dock, fully equipped kitchen etc.) although other guests said their's wasn't as well kitted out as ours. The apartments seemed to me to be privately owned and rented through this intercorp group (there was a couple of notes around our apartment announcing that it was for sale and to contact a particular phone number if you were interested).

By and large, the staff were fantastic. The resort manager, David, and his team were lovely and couldn't do more to help. The introductory meeting is just that: tips about the area and a welcome jug of sangria. The Sales team will then arrange a meeting with you for later in the week. We had Alistair for this meeting and couldn't really fault him: he pitched what he had in a friendly fashion, took us for a coffee and even loaned our children some Disney DVD's of his younger brothers. Unfortunately, at the end of our session he said "Look, I think I have your answer but I have to bring the boss in" and then a man I could only describe as an odious little tosser called Martin began the hard sell routine on us insinuating that we'd be denying our children of holidays by not taking up their time-share offer, that I was closed minded because I wouldn't divulge my salary to him or offer any potential amount I could afford to pay per month etc. and finally (the bit that made me have to leave the room before I went over the desk and clattered him) asking the children "would you like to go to Disneyland?". :o I'll be mailing the company to complain about his heavy him: honestly I've only ever seen a "hard sell" like that on BBC's Watchdog. From talking with other guests on the Groupon deal there, we all got similar treatment from him (though possibly more hard-sell if you've been with Alistair for the first part: some of the other guests had Martin for the full session and didn't seem to get as rough a going over).

I was raging at the time but, all-in-all, I still can't really complain: I got a lovely 4* two bed, two bath apartment in a great resort for a great price and about 3 hours of a soft sell followed by about 45 minutes of the hard sell. The guy was vicious but I'm not sure I'd blame the company or the deal: just a wanker who'd seen Glengarry Glenross too often.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

glad you had a (mostly) good time, shame the one guy had to spoil a bit of it for you.

i might take my previous BA keyring spycam in with me and see if we can't get him on video being a tosseur when we go out there. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

He ruined about 3 hours of a week long holiday for us. As I said, we still had a great time and some of the other staff were brilliant to us.

    Other recommendations:

El Mason restaurant around the corner from the hotel was fantastic, brilliant welcome for the kids and generous with the measures on apertífs (I ordered a whisky and had the bottle placed on the table to help myself, only charged for one).

Flipper Uno Dolphin Sightseeing trip, €50 for our family as the 3 year old was considered a baby and therefore free :) You get a free bar, paella and nibbles during the trip. The boat is done up like a pirate ship and the whole trip is highly entertaining: we didn't find any dolphins but came across a family of pilot whales which is apparently much rarer to see instead. :)

Oh, weather wise: we got 23 - 26 as daily highs and most evenings were a minimum of 16/17. You'd need a jumper after midnight but unless you're particularly cold-blooded, you'll be fine in boardies and a t-shirt until 9/10 :)

Thanks for the info Sleepy. Is it seriously 3 hours they hound you for though?!! I reckon I could hack about an hour of that hard sell crap, but three!!!?? That's a long chunk of sunshine I'll be missing out on. I would seriously end up wanting to knock that guy's lights out.
Personally I'm just going to say 'listen, thanks but no thanks, no money whatsoever to spare etc', and then zone out. If we make it EXPLICITLY clear to them you can't afford it why on earth do they bother wasting their time? I presume that was your response to him too?
I hope it doesn't ruin my sunny June holiday.

I just discovered this thread a moment ago, as soon as I read it, I knew it was a timeshare presentation and I was sifting through to find any comments posted AFTER the presentation.

I just moved from Tenerife to Ireland in April this year. I was selling timeshare there for 4 years, well between there, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. I know Martin very well indeed. Its his job to be mean and nasty and to close you after the nice sales rep has buttered you up. Kind of good guy/ bad guy routine. Its a fairly ruthless game and they are all under pressure to get you to buy and sign straight away with a deposit paid on the spot. They are all solely on commission, thats why you are under such pressure. You really dont think you get such a holiday for such a good price for nothing do you? In fact, you dont even have to pay for any of the holidays at all. You could phone them up and they would invite you out, all you have to pay is the flights. Ask for a "fly by".

When given a scratchcard on the street, the "star prize" is always the letter "B" which will win you a free holiday. Not the camera, laptop, 1200euros or 120euros in cash. That "free" holiday will be another timeshare resort where you will have to attend another meeting and they will try and sell a timeshare or a holiday club of some sort to you. Many tourists exploit this and ask for scracthcards so they can go on these presentations just to obtain the free cigs and drink and another free holiday voucher for later in the year.

Not much point in complaining to Groupon, they will be fully aware of what is going on, its a commercial enterprise and they will be paid handsomely by the resort companies.

Im quite surprised that they actually take Southern Irish people on these holidays. I went to the Canaries in 2007 and from then and including now, they dont allow Irish people (Southern Irish) to go on these presentations. Simply because they cannot get the finance approved for them. When we gave a couple a scratchcard on the street, the typical qualifications for that couple before we could take them to collect their gifts, was that they were from the UK (not Channel Islands), one of the couple were in full time employment, or if retired, must be receiving a private or company pension. Must not have any CCJs (county court judgements), must own their property in the UK, not own any property in Spain, be married, or living together for at least 3 years, must not have worked in the holiday or timeshare industry, must not receive discounted holidays from anywhere else, have a credit card on the island, preferably in their possesion which can be shown at the reception. Not one single timeshare company accepts anyone from Southern Ireland, Liverpool or Asians from anywhere in the UK, unless they already owned a timeshare from another company, in which case they had proved themselves likely to buy.

Loads of times, if we found a couple who had a Northern Irish sounding accent, because they lived close to the border in the South, we would explain that it was a UK only promotion, and we would ask them if they knew anyone in the North and we would ask them to use that address and pretend they lived there. That meant they qualified for their gifts, and we got paid the full rate for that couple which was 150euros, whether they bought anything or not.

Some companies had different rules, like they had to earn over 25k between them, or they had to spend over 1200 on holidays per year.

Its hard to get rid of the OPCs (ticket touts) without being rude, and a lot of the tourists are genuinely nice and dont want to be rude at all. So the best thing to say if you get stopped is to say that you live in Tenerife and thats the end of it. Saying you have a timeshare or anything else isnt a reason for them to not pursue you, in fact we got paid 200euros if they already owned a timeshare as it was really easy to sell to them apparently.

Just be very wary of anything. There is a company called Diamond resorts who is working in conjuction with Thomson (TUI) and the normal holiday reps ask you in the morning meeting if you would like to get some excursions for free, in exchange for having a tour around a new hotel. All sounds plausible enough, but in reality it has nothign whatsoever to do with TUI, its a timeshare club and they simply pay TUI for every couple that their reps manage to send their way.

Its made me very cynical of all companies now, I dont trust any of them. Generally the bigger the company is, the worse they are.

Remember that old saying "buyer beware".

Be careful if you say you are unemployed. Chances are you may have been asked this already during the booking. I might be wrong, but I know of cases where tourists have refused to attend the meeting, or have tried to walk out ealry and the hotel has charged them the full rate for the trip, which will be huge compared to what its worth. Thats another way they scam people.

When you check in, they may ask to scan your credit card, this proves you have one on holiday. You may also be approached to complete what seems like an innocent holiday survey, but very soon the details become personal and they are trying to figure out what they can charge you for their products.

I'd say the best thing you can say, is that it is your very first time abroad, that you only did it because you got this cheap offer. That you dont like the heat, its horrible and you cant wait to return home to Ireland where you have a holiday caravan, where you shall return to for the forseeable future. If you dont show any interest in holidaying, its difficult to sell to you as its not going to be appealing.

The sales reps, they are going to be soooo lovely to you, funny, generous and understanding, its not his job to close the sale, he is just there to wow you with a dream, to show you what you can offer your beloved family for less than youre paying currently. Its the mean closer who will start tightening the nuts on you and will make you feel very uncomfortable.

As for salesman saying "they wouldnt catch me out, I was a salesman" etc, well I hate to say this, but salesman are the worst, they just love to be sold to! Its a similar situation with Policeman or lawyers, they have a false sense of security because they believe there is no chance someone is going to try and scam them because of their job and because they know all about these scams.....next thing you know they are swiping that credit card and signing a contract.

The reality is, if it didnt work, do you think they would have been doing it for years and years?

The only details the hotel have are my name. Booking ref. Email and arrival date. Nothing more. So they know nothing.

if you were round that side of the island much then we probably know a lot of the same people (well, the old timers anyway). :)

i lived out there about 10 years ago for three and a half years and my wife and I met out there.

The hotel won't get any more out of you beyond the usual check-in details of address and email etc.

The first sales guy will, however, get you to fill out a questionnaire which the second guy will try to use as the basis for his "sales" pitch.

djrichard, things have progressed on this from the old scratch card scams. Couple of things related to this deal at least:

    1. Martin is even unpleasant company when he's trying to be nice during the initial welcome meeting. One of those odious little toe-rags who's trying to convince you of his Oirish roots etc.

    2. By selling the accommodation through groupon, the hotel can't ask for credit card details, or subsequently charge you a different rate (I've noticed some of them now stipulate that non-attendance at the sales meeting will result in rack rate but the meeting is specified as 45 minutes in duration: set a timer on your phone and tell the salesman he has 45 minutes to pitch, we were too nice, like you mentioned most people are simply too polite to tell the "hard sell" guy to **** himself. One of the other guests while we were there did just that but the 45 minutes had elapsed at that stage and he simply laughed in Martin's face when he tried threatening him with the level of his bill!

    3) Both the sales guys kept insisting that they weren't on commission, didn't believe it for a minute myself though

I'm not sure why they persist in the bullying sales tactics, I can't see how it works on anyone but the most feeble-minded. Are there really enough of those to make such operations viable.

Personally tempted to try and get another groupon style deal for the same resort, read the T&C's and walk in to the sales meeting with the timer set just for the opportunity to taunt Martin with a "so, we'll never get a holiday as cheaply again, eh?" ;)
