I've been looking through some of my gamestop trade in receipts. Normally when I traded numerous games in, I never asked how much I was getting per game, i'd just take it if it was a decent ammount. I've come accross some shocking ones.

blue dragon, purchased for 19.99 pre owned, traded it in not so long after because I never played it. They gave me 50 cent for it and marked it as defective. So they sold me a defective game (It wasn't, I remember the first disc had some light scratches when I got it, nothing too bad, I played it once so I didn't add anymore scratches to it). The game had 3 discs, talk about a scam. I should bring back the 2 receipts, give them 50 cent and ask for my game back :)

street fighter 4, bought for 29.99 pre owned, was given 3 euro for it.

lego star wars, bought for 24.99 pre owned, given 4 euro.

They were all traded in not so long after purchase so they definately didn't drop much in value. If I went into the shop they were probably back on sale pre owned for the same prices.

Theres many many more where they gave me a ridiculously low ammount but don't have the purchase receipt to compare it to.These were all for trade in credit, I shudder to think what they would have given me in cash. Always take care of the games I have, so they were all exactly the same as when they were bought. I haven't traded anything to gamestop for a while, but I hope they've changed their ways >_>

Its your own fault for not asking at the counter before the deal was done, gamestop or any other business will do what they can get away with, they arent forcing you to sell your games, now if I was the maker of the games themselves I would be very annoyed by this because they dont receive a penny for games sold after trade in

Gamestop are an absolute rip-off when it comes to giving trade-in value, GAME aren't much better and HMV are the best of a bad lot.

I thought gamestop were running a business, not a racket. I traded in around 10 games, big line of people waiting to be served, is it really my fault for expecting to be given a somewhat fair price? Maybe gamestop sould tell us customers how much is being given per game, not do them all at once and give a total.

Does the cashier enter the trade in value, or are they all set on the computer they use?

well whenever I do it, I do it per game. I was once quoted 1.50 for resident evil 4 a few years ago so I told them to go get fu-cked

If you're in Dublin just go to CEX, they have the best prices by far.

The do, only problem is they don't stock any new games - only preowned. You could be left waiting a while for them to get in a new release.

If the trade-in prices are crap for certain games, I make sure the customer knows how little they're getting for certain ones. Don't think I've ever had anyone change their mind and take the game, they'd rather just get rid of them.

(I don't work at GameStop, though)

Well it kind of works the same way right across the board. If you buy a new car and drive it out of the car lot it devalues by thousands. I stopped selling games after i got 4 euros for one.

Samar there in other thread mentioned that xbox 360 rage version was given 19eu trade in? Now that was really really bad...

Or they got a sea of rage coming back after everyone finished it once or gamestop has new policy.

19 euro bad???? I don't think I've ever been given that much. Most I think i've gotten is 11 euro for modern warfare 2 which was traded in when it still sold for around 40 pre owned.

but this is preowned vs preowned :) besides games dont devalue that much tbh. plenty of new games at 44.99 sell for 42.99 used. If gamestop were to sell a game for 29.99 pre owned they should give at least 15 trade in for it, not 3.

Adverts.ie is good for selling games too. You'll always get at least a tenner for a current gen game.

Yes, but rage came out less then 2 weeks ago. It's ID game too. Disappointing ID game, but even barbie island adventure type games had more value after week then 19eu

And I can guarantee you they would sell RAGE for only a few euro less than the brand new price. I have regularly picked up a brand new game for 49.99 because the pre owned one was 44.99 and not enough of a saving knowing well they only gave the guy who traded it in half that.

OP Try gamesnash.ie for trade in also. If your lucky some of your games might be on their list of special deals and you can trade in 3 and get a brand new game free. The list isn't always just new games either. You can e-mail them a list of games and if your not happy with the offer just leave it.

no doubt rage has more value than 19. gamestop sell it pre owned for 38 so they are giving 50 percent trade in value. very low for a new release game though.

Some of the prices they offer are madness. I always, ALWAYS ask to see how much the games are to trade in and ask for the ones back that I think aren't worth it in the end. I'd rather keep the game than get €2 for a game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,116 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

It's up to the trader to make sure they're happy with the prices before accepting the trade in. I don't work for GameStop (anymore) or any other games retailer, but the mark up can be up to 700% sometimes on traded in games.

I got €19 credit for Rage a week after i bought it, and i thought it was fair value considering the game is crap and more than likely they're going to be stuck with hundreds of copies of the game. You'll get an amount for the game that will be considered a reasonable amount when the game drops in price.

The most i've ever gotten for a game is €45 credit. Can't remember what it was for, but i bought it, finished it and traded it in 2 days later. Got another brand new game free! Oh, and the worst part was that the next owner would have had to buy an online pass for €5 to play online. I think it was Red Faction: Armageddon.

Anyway, bottom line is, make sure you know what you're getting before you accept and sign the receipt.

Since we have a Gamestop thread already I thought I'd post this here rather than creating a new thread.

Seems like Gamestop are ramping up their push for second hand games....again.

EB Games/GameStop Gets Rid of Used Games Section

Now, while the report claims they will still make the distinction between New and Used on the sticker, I'd be interested to see how prominant it is given the fact they're also going to be using the same type/colour sticker for both. Not only will this be important for actually buying the correct copy at a non-inflated price but there's also the issue of the online pass code likely already being used on second hand copies. This, combined with the fact that the Used games will be on the top of the stack, just comes across as a blatent move to take advantage of people who don't know any better. All in all a pretty crappy move even for a company like them. :(

Read this earlier today. Not surprised at all to be honest. It's a bad idea imo, for everyone (including Gamestop). They are just forcing publishers to do more to fight 2nd hand sales, as they'll see more and more money go to the stores. Online passes, day 1 dlc for 1st time buyers etc...it's going to get worse as Gamestop keep pushing the 2nd hand market.

The sooner we can get competitive digital distribution on all formats, the better.

Haven't bought from them in a while as they haven't been competitive regards price and trade in value compared with hmv on new releases.

The prices different places offer for used games varies wildly in my experience, I remember trading in Dead Island when it was in short supply and got back 40euro for it.

Then last week I went into game and was offered 9 euro for gears of war 3, took it to hmv and got €28 for it.

Mixing new and used is just outright deceitful, savvy gamers like us will know to check if it's new and be fully aware of online passes and stuff but with christmas coming how many girlfriends, mothers, fathers etc will be making the annual trip to a gamestop to get a gift for someone ? Call a spade a spade it's preying on ignorance plain and simple, they don't even mark down used games or trade in values with used online passes accordingly to compensate for the additional cost a person my incur if they want to play on line.

HUGE problems with this will of course be with the online code games. Generic_Customer_01 will grab the top copy of NHL 12, go home, and not be able to play online. There are also MANY games where the new copy is as cheap as $19.99 but the used copies stacked on top of it are $34.99
    That's madness...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

    It will be chaos.

In Ireland there are only display boxes, so no actuoll games. So I can't see this working here.

Will pricing be same of new and used? Or it will still have separate pricing, but no indication of used or new?

I am for sure will ask only wrapped game with all security labels, but even so I can't see the local GameStop fellas doing something stupid like this...

Online codes will be a huge problem! It might bite GameStop for false advertising in the end.

The Gamestop shops do make a good mark up on their preowned stock, naturally enough.
The reason for giving you such a small amount for, say, Street Fighter 4 is that they probably have loads of them, they are not shifting and so, to disuade people from trading in even more, they drop the trade in price.
I see it was Street Fighter 4 you bought, that hasn't been 29.99 from a very long time, the last time I saw that in GS it was 14.99.
If it was SSFIV you might get more but I don't think it's that much higher than the 15 to 20 mark for it.
As for Lego Star Wars, which one? I mean they are mostly getting on a bit, again not that expensive to buy preowned so it's no wonder you didn't get much on trade.

If you don't like what they are offering why whine here that you took the deal when there are other places that will take games in on trade, from HMV to Xtravision, to selling them on Done Deal or Adverts.
You ask "how much do I get" and you take the deal or not.

No one puts a gun to your head.

So don't deal with them, go elsewhere.

If a game is traded in and they say it has a scratched disk, confirm it and take it away with you if you don't like the trade in value.
If it did have a scratch was it there when you bought it?
Did you not check the disks before you left the counter?

If you are buying goods, especially preowned goods it is up to you to make sure you are getting what you pay for.
If you are trading goods you are in control and can walk off at any time if you feel the shop is being unfair with the trade valuation.

Regarding Rage and the preowned value, the game massively underperformed at retail, and so the trade-in value has plummeted, within a week or two of release.
    That's normal, smart business practice.

People continually bitch on about dumb decisions that they made, that they are responsible for, trying to pin their own lack of self control on the guy or gal behind the counter.
And, regular as clockwork, they post the crap up in these forums and, regular as clockwork, get told the same thing,

No One Made You Accept The Deal,
    Get Over It.

I think this story from Eurogamer is pretty relevent. Gamestop and their ilk are dying on their arses. I couldn't tell you the last time I bought a videogame in a specialist shop like theirs. HMV are always, always cheaper than Game or Gamestop, zavvi and the rest of thehut group are cheaper still and that's ignoring direct downloads.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't want to buy physical videogames any more. This weekend I moved house, filling up six boxes full of console games while I was able to carry my laptop with it's Steam account and hundred odd games under my arm.

I find there are bargains here and bargains there, if you are willing to travel you will always get the best prices, be it for COD:MW3 at launch where it was Tescos or whatever.
I find Gamestop good for some things and other stores good for others.

All bricks and mortar shops are going through the mill, I find even the games dept of HMV doesn't have the same impact anymore.

Specialist gameshops also have a far far better range of games in stock for all systems than the large music or toy shops have, it's a simple fact.
Just look at the shelf space devoted to 360 games in your local GS compared to HMV, the preowned section of HMV is, typically, quite small.

Me, I collect games, be they retro or otherwise, I have a massive selection of titles and I like it that way.
Good luck playing your back catalogue of console titles when the next gen or two won't run it anymore.

Well Gamestop only offer you a value! It is then your choice to accept or decline! If you accept it you feel it is a fair price so how is gamestop a rip off? Also if gamestop have a game that throughout the company they maybe have 200 copies why would they offer huge money for something they already have vast amounts of.....

    .

Gamestop earned $2 billion in used sales alone in 2009
, and that increased to 3 in 2010 from what I recall reading, but have yet to source. Point being, Gamestop isn't a struggling corp, fighting for its very existence. It's very much a healthy, salivating behemoth baying for greater profit year-in/year-out. Like any corporation, really.
